St. John’s In-Game Thread
By JohnnyHey everybody, we’re about 45 minutes away from tipoff in the first of two meetings between the Georgetown Hoyas and the St. John’s Red Storm. When you look at the standings, it doesn’t look like it’s gonna be too close a contest with Georgetown at the top of the conference and St. John’s at the bottom, but the Big East is the Big East, and no game is every easy.
Stay tuned for our in-game commentary, and be sure to leave your thoughts in the comments.

Come on Hoyas, it’ll be good to keep our winning streak at the Garden intact.
January 30th, 2008 at 6:49 pm
i hate waiting for these games to start…lets come out strong hoyas!!
January 30th, 2008 at 6:55 pm
Johnny, I am siting next to your space on press row. It is empty. Are you at tonight’s game?
January 30th, 2008 at 7:00 pm
Hey Jon, yeah I’m calling this one from home today. Feel free to give any insight from MSG throughout the game.
January 30th, 2008 at 7:01 pm
Summers in street clothes, Ewing starts in his place.
January 30th, 2008 at 7:04 pm
Thanks Jon,
Like he said, there’s no Summers today, so the starting lineup for the Hoyas is: Wallace, Sapp, Freeman, Ewing, and Hibbert.
For the Red Storm: Lawrence, Kennedy, Mason, Burrell, and Evans
January 30th, 2008 at 7:05 pm
good take, roy, nice patience
January 30th, 2008 at 7:06 pm
Hibbert goes 1 for 2 from the line, and then the Hoyas get a defensive stop on their first possesion.
January 30th, 2008 at 7:08 pm
hows it no shot clock vbiolation there? tehy should have 3 already
January 30th, 2008 at 7:10 pm
nice
January 30th, 2008 at 7:12 pm
Foul on Hibbert, his first, team’s second, Ewing is the other Hoya with a foul.
January 30th, 2008 at 7:12 pm
At the 16 minute timeout, Hoyas are winning 6-2. It will be St. John’s ball when we get back.
January 30th, 2008 at 7:16 pm
incredible steal for jessie there
January 30th, 2008 at 7:16 pm
Two quick baskets by the Hoyas and St. John’s needs a 30.
January 30th, 2008 at 7:18 pm
wow, a double digit lead, forgot what that felt like, lets see if we can keep it that way
January 30th, 2008 at 7:19 pm
There’s no Summers today, but the Hoyas have already gone deep into the bench, as Rivers, Macklin, and Crawford are all in right now.
January 30th, 2008 at 7:20 pm
backdoor this team, they are outmatched at every position
January 30th, 2008 at 7:22 pm
should have been another shot clock violation, we got it anyway, but they shouldnt have even gotten the shot off
January 30th, 2008 at 7:23 pm
Foul on Booth with 11:45 in the half sends out another timeout, Hoyas leading 15-2. St. John’s has still yet to score a field goal.
January 30th, 2008 at 7:26 pm
Late whistle there, but we’ll take it
January 30th, 2008 at 7:27 pm
Nice read by Rivers for the steal, and NBA three for Patrick, 18-2 Hoyas.
January 30th, 2008 at 7:28 pm
Foul on Macklin, his first, team third, Burrell shooting two
January 30th, 2008 at 7:29 pm
Wallace hits his first three in a while and St. John’s needs another timeout. 21-3.
January 30th, 2008 at 7:31 pm
another offensive foul on stjohns, is that 3 arleady?
January 30th, 2008 at 7:31 pm
Nice dunk! He usually lays those up.
January 30th, 2008 at 7:31 pm
bogus offensive foul there, roy’s second, garbage
January 30th, 2008 at 7:32 pm
Refs are obsessed with illegal screens today
January 30th, 2008 at 7:34 pm
I don’t think I’ve ever seen anything like this before. 12:06 played, still no SJU field goals.
January 30th, 2008 at 7:34 pm
After a block by Patrick Ewing, we’re at the 8:00 minute timeout, Hoyas leading 24-3 with the ball.
January 30th, 2008 at 7:36 pm
Yeah, if the Hoyas keep this up, the final score might look like the first game against Maryland: 58-3.
January 30th, 2008 at 7:37 pm
dude, im loving this!!
January 30th, 2008 at 7:38 pm
Jeez, I know we’re winning, but hold on to that ball.
January 30th, 2008 at 7:38 pm
slippery ball today, thrid time its gone through our fingers
January 30th, 2008 at 7:41 pm
make your free throws
January 30th, 2008 at 7:41 pm
oooomph!!!!!
January 30th, 2008 at 7:42 pm
fts for macklin, this should be fun
January 30th, 2008 at 7:43 pm
First field goal for St. John’s comes with 4:30 left in the half. But the score is still 31-7, so Red Storm fans shouldn’t get too excited just yet.
January 30th, 2008 at 7:44 pm
come on rivers, thats two misses now
January 30th, 2008 at 7:44 pm
3 misses
January 30th, 2008 at 7:44 pm
not fun for Macklin
January 30th, 2008 at 7:46 pm
When Penn scored just one field goal in the first half earlier this year against Florida Gulf Coast, that came with 6:31 remaining. Any idea what the longest span between opening tip and first FG is? 15:27 is a possible NCAA record.
January 30th, 2008 at 7:49 pm
ugh, 4-11 on fts, i dont care if we are winning by 20, gotta make those
January 30th, 2008 at 7:58 pm
would have been the height of ironyhad St. John’s made that halfcourt bomb
January 30th, 2008 at 7:59 pm
That’ll do it for the first half. After some buckets for Macklin, the score at the half is 41-14. Not quite 41-9 like the St. John’s game in 1982, but not a bad half away from home.
January 30th, 2008 at 8:15 pm
keep it up hoyas!
January 30th, 2008 at 8:18 pm
AlaBAM
January 30th, 2008 at 8:23 pm
Not able to watch on TV here in philly, but from the sounds of it, they need to call this one off. I would have more success going up against Tyson circa 1987 than these Johnnies are having tonight.
January 30th, 2008 at 8:26 pm
Paul H, you’re the lucky one tonight. It’s great that the hoyas are on cruise control but this game is ugly.
January 30th, 2008 at 8:27 pm
Well Paul, I think you have to see this to believe it. It’s unbelievable how inefficient this team’s been playing on offense today. Every shot is a clanker.
January 30th, 2008 at 8:29 pm
the rivers/macklin freethrow adventure continues
January 30th, 2008 at 8:29 pm
hate to be a downer, but make the fts!!
January 30th, 2008 at 8:32 pm
How many minutes have Macklin and Hibbert played on the floor at the same time before tonight?
January 30th, 2008 at 8:34 pm
Jon, they’ve played together before. Never for too long, but in a bunch of the Big East games, they’ve been on the court at the same time for 2 or 3 minute stretches.
More unusual is when they’re both out together. That happened in Morgantown this weekend.
January 30th, 2008 at 8:34 pm
have we emptied the bench yet? omar wattad needs some burn.
January 30th, 2008 at 8:36 pm
Nope. Still just 8 guys: Wallace, Sapp, Freeman, Ewing, Hibbert, Rivers, Macklin, and Crawford.
Clearing the bench will really just be Omar and Jansen today, though.
January 30th, 2008 at 8:37 pm
refs have to start calling gouls on both ends, they have shot fts every possession this half it seems
January 30th, 2008 at 8:37 pm
well then, let’s get tyler some points!
January 30th, 2008 at 8:38 pm
a circus shot by SJ
January 30th, 2008 at 8:39 pm
Chvotkin just called Ewing’s Jam “high-arching, knee-jerking” translation from somebody watching?
January 30th, 2008 at 8:40 pm
Macklin’s stepped it up. He’s already got 12 points.
January 30th, 2008 at 8:42 pm
@Paul: It was a two-handed, tomahawk slam, with a leg kick. He was wide open on the baseline when he got the pass, so he could afford to get fancy. The 30 point lead didnt hurt either.
January 30th, 2008 at 8:43 pm
Really liked Macklin’s shot off-glass turning left from outside his normal range. You could tell Macklin was especially happy with that one, slapping his hands together in satisfaction as he ran back to to the other end of the floor.
January 30th, 2008 at 8:45 pm
send it in!!
January 30th, 2008 at 8:46 pm
What’s Roy’s line tonight so far?
January 30th, 2008 at 8:47 pm
Roy’s shot 5-8 so far for 11 points (1-2 from the line). He’s also got a bunch of blocks, but I don’t have that number for you.
January 30th, 2008 at 8:48 pm
OT but just found this vid of the end of WV game dubbed with the Chovtz call. Good times…

January 30th, 2008 at 8:48 pm
thanks Johnny
January 30th, 2008 at 8:49 pm
Roy:
5-8 FGs, 1-2 FTs, 11 points, 6 rebounds, 2 assists, 3 TOs, 3 steals.
On the bench. 4:38 left.
January 30th, 2008 at 8:50 pm
(three blocks, not three steals)
January 30th, 2008 at 8:52 pm
Darnit. We may not double them up now!
January 30th, 2008 at 8:54 pm
Good news: Vernon hit a free throw, and Omar is in.
January 30th, 2008 at 8:55 pm
Macklin with a foul shot made
January 30th, 2008 at 8:56 pm
Good game for Big Ticket. Hopefully this will be a confidence booster. Now if he can just work on his stroke at the sin stripe.
January 30th, 2008 at 8:57 pm
Bryan Jansen enters the game, along with Omar Wattad with 2:11 left.
January 30th, 2008 at 9:02 pm
wow, i forgot what it felt like to dont worry when there’s only 6 seconds left in a game. it feels good
January 30th, 2008 at 9:03 pm
Jansen with the kiss!
January 30th, 2008 at 9:03 pm
Jansen banks a three at the buzzer to make the final score 74-42 for the Hoyas. Solid win, and definitely what these Hoyas needed after all those close games.
January 30th, 2008 at 9:07 pm
Is this the largest margin of victory ever vs. SJU?
January 30th, 2008 at 9:13 pm
@Paul:
It’s the biggest margin of victory against St. John’s since the Big East started.
In 1919-1920, the Hoyas won 50-23, and the following year, the Hoyas won 51-15.
Since then, the biggest victory for the Hoyas was that game in 82.
