Davidson In-Game Thread
By JohnnyHey everybody, Johnny here from Raleigh, checking in about an hour before tipoff at the RBC Center. Georgetown is set to face the Davidson Wildcats led by Sophomore phenom Stephen Curry. With a spot in the Sweet Sixteen on the line, be prepared for an intense matchup in a hectic atmosphere as the North Carolina locals will be here to root on Davidson like they did on Friday against Gonzaga. Also, in the second game of today’s session, UNC takes the court, so there will be a lot of anti-Georgetown fans here to boot.
In order to move on in the tournament, Georgetown will have to weather the crowd and the sharp shooter, and they’ll need to remain poised and focused as they have been all year.
I’ll check back with lineups and stats and whatever you ask for in the next few hours, so stay tuned.
March 23rd, 2008 at 2:18 pm
We’re still a little over half an houraway, but I have the starting lineups for you.
For Georgetown, it should be the same five as usual:
Wallace, Summers, Freeman, Sapp, and Hibbert.
The Davidson Wildcats will be starting Richards, Curry, Gosselin, Lovedale, and Sander.
And the refs will be Tom O’Neill, Paul Janssen, and Douglas Sirmons. Richard Randall will be on standby.
March 23rd, 2008 at 2:23 pm
I think the GU Pep Band is playing the theme from “The Incredibles.” Haven’t heard them do that one before. But they’ve just been wiped out by the Davidson Pep Band introducing their team who are back for layup lines.
March 23rd, 2008 at 2:28 pm
i like it, roy as mr. incredible, sapp as dash, maybe summers as frozone cause he’s got ice in his veins…lets hope we can take care of this guys today iwith a super performance…maybe i drew that allusion out a bit to far
March 23rd, 2008 at 2:46 pm
Is it game time yet? Or is it just time for the national anthem?
March 23rd, 2008 at 2:48 pm
they just took a timeout in the tennessee game, i hope tehy come straight back to our game, otherwise we’ll miss the tip again
March 23rd, 2008 at 2:48 pm
They already did the National Anthem, courtesy of Aaron Broadus and the GU Pep Band. Now they’re doing the starting lineups, and then we should be all set to go.
March 23rd, 2008 at 2:50 pm
Oh yeah, if you are having problems with TV because CBS switches away or anything, let me know and I’ll be a little more detailed in the updates.
March 23rd, 2008 at 2:50 pm
alright boys, lets go
March 23rd, 2008 at 2:51 pm
Hibbert loses the jump, and the Wildcats get a bucket on the first possession.
March 23rd, 2008 at 2:51 pm
Summers responds with a two of his own. 2-2.
March 23rd, 2008 at 2:51 pm
nice answer by dajuan
March 23rd, 2008 at 2:52 pm
come on roy, use your head
March 23rd, 2008 at 2:52 pm
Lovedale hits a jumper and is fouled by Hibbert. He’ll be going to the line and Hibbert’s picked up his first.
March 23rd, 2008 at 2:53 pm
horrible call there
March 23rd, 2008 at 2:54 pm
good take for jessie
March 23rd, 2008 at 2:54 pm
Dangerous play by Roy there.
March 23rd, 2008 at 2:56 pm
gotta call that foul, just shoved summers out of bounds
March 23rd, 2008 at 2:57 pm
im scared of this reffing, we kind of dont want them to go crazy with the whistles
March 23rd, 2008 at 2:59 pm
Foul on Macklin, the second on the team, Roy Hibbert with the other one, Hoyas up early, 6-4, 15:49 to play in the first.
March 23rd, 2008 at 3:02 pm
nice stroke
March 23rd, 2008 at 3:02 pm
GET THAT OUT OF HERE!
March 23rd, 2008 at 3:03 pm
Looked like the Davidson found a weak spot in the Hoyas’ defense, but out of nowhere Patrick rose to swat that shot away.
March 23rd, 2008 at 3:04 pm
come on hoyas, get your heads in the game
March 23rd, 2008 at 3:06 pm
horrible call, such a flop there,
March 23rd, 2008 at 3:07 pm
big shot from sapp, gotta make sure we get out on curry, hes had a few open looks tath ahve been halfway down
March 23rd, 2008 at 3:08 pm
Strange offensive foul on Hibbert there is his second. Both guys were pushing each other the whole possession, and then when Pat throws Roy the ball, it goes straight out of bounds. No need for a whistle there but Roy is subbed out with 2.
March 23rd, 2008 at 3:08 pm
Georgetown up 14-13 at the 12 minute timeout, but Davidson ball after the second offensive foul on the Hoyas, this one on Summers.
March 23rd, 2008 at 3:09 pm
horrible calls there, pat gets smashed, no call, then that charge? refs lost control of the game already
March 23rd, 2008 at 3:09 pm
They call an offensive foul on Summers, which is a bit strange because the ref in front of me was about to call a block but the baseline official called it the other way.
March 23rd, 2008 at 3:11 pm
SEND IT IN!
March 23rd, 2008 at 3:12 pm
Strong take by Patrick earns him a slam and a foul shot.
March 23rd, 2008 at 3:12 pm
gonna need some big minutes from macklin today, lets go
March 23rd, 2008 at 3:13 pm
yikes, lets hope we can get one, or at least a offensive rebound on the vernon fts
March 23rd, 2008 at 3:14 pm
When Macklin hit that first free throw, the Hoya loyal contingent went crazy. Too bad he missed the second.
March 23rd, 2008 at 3:15 pm
Second foul on Sander is Davidson’s 7th. Patrick to shoot 1 and 1.
March 23rd, 2008 at 3:15 pm
curry a little cowardice on that play i think. also, they called a hold on one of our cuts, tahts critical for us to back cut them
March 23rd, 2008 at 3:15 pm
a lot of whistles tends to hurt us
March 23rd, 2008 at 3:15 pm
“over the back. no call” is what nance said about the macklin hustle, what an ass
March 23rd, 2008 at 3:16 pm
Curry hits a floater to get his first points of the game.
March 23rd, 2008 at 3:17 pm
another charge??????/
March 23rd, 2008 at 3:17 pm
Third offensive foul on the Hoyas is the seventh team foul. Player control means no 1 and 1.
March 23rd, 2008 at 3:17 pm
wow, we are getting lucky on these open looks for curry
March 23rd, 2008 at 3:18 pm
wow, i think they fould makclin on purpose there
March 23rd, 2008 at 3:19 pm
big big shots for macklin, people always say the ft problem is in his head, lets hope its out of his head now
March 23rd, 2008 at 3:20 pm
big shot by austin, nice dish by macklin toooo
March 23rd, 2008 at 3:22 pm
The second foul on Ewing puts Richards on the line with the Hoyas up by seven. 22-15 with 7:58 left in the first half.
March 23rd, 2008 at 3:23 pm
Ref are really bad. Not biased, just horrible.
March 23rd, 2008 at 3:25 pm
darnit! macklin knocked away a tip in for wright there i think
March 23rd, 2008 at 3:25 pm
Macklin’s trying really hard out there, and is pretty upset with himself for missing that put back. He’s back at the line, though, shooting two.
March 23rd, 2008 at 3:25 pm
sweeeetness from macklin
March 23rd, 2008 at 3:26 pm
gotta pull away while Curry is out
March 23rd, 2008 at 3:26 pm
stupid stupid turnover there
March 23rd, 2008 at 3:27 pm
clear foul on that macklin send in, no foul called, and for some reason nance and packer fail to mention it. hmm….
March 23rd, 2008 at 3:27 pm
@Helmet Head,
I’m not sure if they’re pulling away yet, but Davidson did miss a couple threes right there where Curry could have helped
March 23rd, 2008 at 3:28 pm
Nantz is too busy talking about the taste of coke zero
March 23rd, 2008 at 3:29 pm
man, they’re making every ft too
March 23rd, 2008 at 3:30 pm
bullseye
March 23rd, 2008 at 3:30 pm
THAT IS A EFFING RIDICULOUS CALL, INCREDIBLE
March 23rd, 2008 at 3:32 pm
YEAH MACKLIN
March 23rd, 2008 at 3:33 pm
I like that play. I hear Austin screaming to the ref, “Timeout! Timeout!” No response. Then the ball lands in his lap, he passes to Vernon who hits a baby hook, and then Davidson calls a timeout instead.
Hoyas lea 34-23 with 3:45 to go in the half.
March 23rd, 2008 at 3:35 pm
dude, they keep showing the replay of the macklin dunk, and they have the mic and you can here him give this yell after the dunk, and every time tehy show the replay you hear it him go, “aaaaAAAA!” I love it
March 23rd, 2008 at 3:36 pm
Davidson band is playing, “Low” by Flo Rida and T. Payne.
March 23rd, 2008 at 3:36 pm
That’s what I call the BAMBAM effect.
March 23rd, 2008 at 3:37 pm
I don’t know if I’ve seen a purer shot in person than that one from Austin Freeman.
March 23rd, 2008 at 3:40 pm
The Hoyas up by 14, 37-23, with 2:32 to play in the first half, but Davidson to the free throw line shooting two.
March 23rd, 2008 at 3:42 pm
darnit, had a good chance to go up 15 there, need a defnse now
March 23rd, 2008 at 3:45 pm
Curry hits his first three to cut the lead to 11, and the crowd here is loving it.
March 23rd, 2008 at 3:45 pm
wow, big turn of events there, a three for curry, now an off the ball offensive foul, such garbage
March 23rd, 2008 at 3:46 pm
important stop there, good work boys, now lets lock them down in the second, keep up the big defense on curry, and lets see if roy can do some damage
March 23rd, 2008 at 3:47 pm
That’s the end of the half, Hoyas leading 38-27. The refs have been calling this game very tight. Like Big A said, it’s not biased, both teams reached the double bonus, but it’s just called very close. I’ll update you with the foul trouble and some more stats in a bit.
March 23rd, 2008 at 3:59 pm
I just got the halftime stats, and here are some things of note. First, some things everybody noticed:
Macklin hit his free throws. He was 4 of 6 from the line, much better than his 20% on the season. In fact when he hit his 2nd, I heard Davidson coach Bob McKillop say something to his bench about how he’s not a good FT shooter.
Next, the Hoyas shut down Curry for most of the half. Unlike his 8-10 three-point shooting in Round 1, he was only 2-8 from the field, and 1-5 from downtown. But against Gonzaga, he only had 10 points at halftime and ended with 40, so the Hoyas will have to keep up the high pressure defense for twenty more minutes.
Other things of note:
The Hoyas are shooting 66.7% from the field, including 71.4% from behind the arc.
Davidson, on the other hand, is shooting 26.7% from the field and only 14.3% from three-point land.
And here’s the foul count:
Summers, Hibbert, Freeman, and Ewing each have two.
Wallace, Sapp, Macklin, Wright, and Rivers each have one.
Crawford is the only Georgetown player to have minutes but no fouls.
For Davidson, Curry, Sander, Lovedale, and Archambault all have two. Richards, Meno, and Rossiter each have one.
March 23rd, 2008 at 4:02 pm
Oh, and I just noticed - despite saying “Official Basketball Box Score” on top of the stats sheet I got, it also says, “(Unofficial)” written in in pen.
So maybe those fouls aren’t exactly right. I had Macklin with two and Summers with only one. But to paraphrase the Nike commercials, “My unofficial is more unofficial than your unofficial.”
March 23rd, 2008 at 4:03 pm
The referees haven’t been bad, necessarily, in the sense that they have been consistent, but I get the feeling both coaches would have rather had fewer fouls called. We will have to wait and see if the referees keep calling the game close, or start to swallow the whistle as we get closer to crunch time.
March 23rd, 2008 at 4:04 pm
ESPN shows Summers with 2 fouls
March 23rd, 2008 at 4:06 pm
We’re set to start the second, and the Hoyas have the ball.
March 23rd, 2008 at 4:08 pm
nice and easy for wallace
March 23rd, 2008 at 4:08 pm
sweetness
March 23rd, 2008 at 4:09 pm
Third foul on Hibbert, another charge.
March 23rd, 2008 at 4:09 pm
stupid by hibbert, but still a horrible call
March 23rd, 2008 at 4:10 pm
good foul there on jessie, but our defesne gave up too many 3s there
March 23rd, 2008 at 4:12 pm
wow, incredible refereeing, i cant believe it, we need to get a stop now
March 23rd, 2008 at 4:12 pm
Pretty bad call there, as Freeman was just standing there with his arms out, but he picked up his third as well.
March 23rd, 2008 at 4:13 pm
and no foul there?
March 23rd, 2008 at 4:13 pm
Traveling on DaJuan leaves him with nothing to do but laugh it off.
March 23rd, 2008 at 4:15 pm
Packer and Nance scream in unison “no foul” when we block a deperation throw with the shot clock down. Good impartial announcing.
March 23rd, 2008 at 4:16 pm
A shot clock violation against Davidson gives the ball back to the Hoyas with 15:38 to play in the game. Georgetown up 46-32. An update on foul trouble, Hibbert and Freeman each have three for the Hoyas, and Sander with three fouls for Davidson.
March 23rd, 2008 at 4:18 pm
there is no charge on that play though? i mean given the offensive they just called on freeman for nothing?
March 23rd, 2008 at 4:19 pm
gotta find him in transition, we have to watch out for him now
March 23rd, 2008 at 4:20 pm
Four point play by Curry cuts the lead to 11, 48-37.

March 23rd, 2008 at 4:26 pm
terrible foul call nice to see JTIII get pissed off
March 23rd, 2008 at 4:27 pm
The fourth foul on Roy, the third offensive on him, takes us to 11:37 with the Hoya lead cut to 11, 50-39. Davidson ball after the timeout.
March 23rd, 2008 at 4:27 pm
During the timeout, Coach Thompson had a word with the officials about Roy’s fourth, but no technical was given. From my lip-reading abilities, I believe the ref told the scorer’s table that our bench just received a Warning.
March 23rd, 2008 at 4:28 pm
More Hoya turnovers, and some layups for Davidson has the lead cut to seven. Really loud in here.
March 23rd, 2008 at 4:29 pm
wow, i cant believe the reffing in this one atrocious
March 23rd, 2008 at 4:30 pm
lets go hoyas get a stop
March 23rd, 2008 at 4:31 pm
Curry three cuts the lead to 4, 50-46, and the crowd here goes absolutely nuts. Hoyas take a timeout with 9:18 remaining.
March 23rd, 2008 at 4:34 pm
Roy’s checked back in for the Hoyas.
March 23rd, 2008 at 4:35 pm

March 23rd, 2008 at 4:35 pm

March 23rd, 2008 at 4:37 pm
After the foul on Summers, Davidson to shoot free throws, 1-1, with 7:56 left in the game. They Georgetown lead, 17 at one point, is now only four, 52-48.
March 23rd, 2008 at 4:37 pm
The Davidson band has started playing “Sweet Caroline” the crowd pleaser that helped pushed them past Gonzaga two days ago.
March 23rd, 2008 at 4:38 pm
i really cant believe this coverage… cant we just watch our game in peace?? who gives a damn about tennessee
March 23rd, 2008 at 4:39 pm
Richards’ free throws cut the lead to two.
March 23rd, 2008 at 4:41 pm
Despite what the fans thought, the foul is on the floor. Only 1 and 1 for Curry.
March 23rd, 2008 at 4:41 pm
and they are shooting fts on every possession now, looks like, gotta just fight througw it. tv says 9-4 on fouls

March 23rd, 2008 at 4:42 pm

March 23rd, 2008 at 4:43 pm
After Jessie knocks down a three to push the lead to five, Curry responds with a three of his own. Timeout Davidson. Hoyas lead 57-55 with 6:22 remaining.
March 23rd, 2008 at 4:44 pm
Sixth foul on Davidson, Hoyas will be shooting from now on.
March 23rd, 2008 at 4:45 pm
no foul?????
March 23rd, 2008 at 4:45 pm
That was a jump ball before the shotclock violation, so Hoyas now have possession if it comes to that.
March 23rd, 2008 at 4:46 pm
away from teh ball foul puts them at the line for 2?
March 23rd, 2008 at 4:46 pm
gotta rebound
March 23rd, 2008 at 4:46 pm
Third foul on Sapp, under the basket, away from the play gives Davidson two free throws to tie the game at 57.
March 23rd, 2008 at 4:47 pm
Block on Curry, Wright to shoot 1 and 1.
March 23rd, 2008 at 4:47 pm
dangerous drive and wright not good from the line
March 23rd, 2008 at 4:47 pm

Curry hits a contested three to go up five.
March 23rd, 2008 at 4:52 pm
wow, need to get composed now
March 23rd, 2008 at 4:52 pm
Timeout Georgetown as this place is exploding.
March 23rd, 2008 at 4:53 pm
lets go hoyas, we have been behind before, lets score here and see what happens
March 23rd, 2008 at 4:53 pm
