Hoyas Gewinnen Bundesliga
By JohnnyAt the beginning of last week, I mentioned that at least one Hoya would win a championship by the end of the month. And sure enough, Jonathan Wallace and Ruben Boumtje-Boumtje won the Basketball Bundesliga championship, edging out Brandon Bowman’s Telekom Baskets Bonn in the decisive Game 5.
Bowman and Bonni took the early lead in the series, beating Jon and Ruben’s EWE Baskets Oldenburg on the road 74-72. Brandon led all scorers with 26 to go with his 7 rebounds and 2 blocks.
In Game 2, Oldenburg regained home court advantage by winning at Bonn, but Game 3 was another road victory, and Bowman’s side took the series lead 2-1. But with elimination on the line, EWE Baskets Oldenburg stunned the home crowd by coasting to another road victory 82-66, forcing a decisive Game 5.
It looked as if the Championship series would end up with no team winning on their home court, as Telekom Baskets Bonn took an eight point lead into the 4th quarter. But Oldenburg clawed back in it, eventually taking the lead with under three minutes to play. After trading free throws, Bowman’s side went ahead thanks to four straight points from teammate Earl Rowland, and with 22 seconds left in the game, Brandon blocked a shot to give his team the ball, up by three.
Two missed free throws from Rowland, a three point play from Oldenburg’s Jason Gardner to tie the game, a pass into press row, and a free throw later, and the game was over - the home team had stolen the victory.
While Jon Wallace did not get into the Championship game, Ruben led Oldenburg with nine rebounds and two blocks. Brandon had 14 points in the losing effort.
Congratulations to the Bundesliga Champions!
