Rutgers In-Game Thread

By Johnny

Hey everybody, Johnny here at the RAC, half an hour away from tipoff between the Georgetown Hoyas and Rutgers Scarlet Knights.

I don’t have fond memories of this arena, as the first time I was here, I learned that Chris Wright was going to miss the entire Big East season, and the last time I was here, the Hoyas were handed a devastating defeat on Valentine’s day one year ago. Hopefully, this time, the trip to RAC will bring more positive news with a road victory and the start of a large winning streak.

As I was entering the arena, there were tons of fans piling in, and you’d be happy to know, they were Georgetown fans, coming off of the Hoya Hoop Club bus. Right now me, the Hoyas fans, and the Rutgers pep band are the only ones here, but that’s soon to change as the Hoyas always draw a big crowd here in Piscataway.

As always, I’ll be checking back in with news and updates, and now, I have very little info for you because the scoreboard says the Hoyas are starting Ryan Dougherty and John Caprio, so that’s probably not updated yet.

Stay tuned for more.

  1. Evan C Says:

Refs are Jim Haney, Gene Steratore and Sean Corbin, formerly of the NBA.

  2. Johnny Says:

Thanks Evan! Even more unlikely that Dougherty starting, though, is what the scoreboard now reads. Dougherty is starting and already has 11 points entering the game

  3. Evan C Says:

You know, the computer up here in the press box that controls “WELCOME TO THE LOUIS BROWN ATHLETIC CENTER” scrolling message on the center scoreboard is unguarded.

What would happen should that message start to flash “HOYA SAXA, OH MY”?

    hmm :)

  4. Johnny Says:

The teams have come out for warmups, and the Hoya fans (pictured below) just started the Georgetown fight song.

    Hoyas Fans in Rutgers

  6. Johnny Says:

RU Pep Band finished their Michael Jackson medley, Beat It and Thriller.

  7. Johnny Says:

10 minutes to tipoff, I’m sitting next to friend and colleague Jon Solomon from PrincetonBasketball.com

  8. Johnny Says:

Scoreboard updated – starting lineups for the Hoyas say Sims instead of Freeman, so that might be typo, but we’ll see.

  9. Johnny Says:

Hoyas starters – Wright, Freeman, Clark, Sims, Vaughn (scoreboard’s wrong)

  10. Evan C Says:

Gotta be a typo. The gamestats laptop shows our usual starters.

  11. Johnny Says:

RU starters – Miller, Beatty, Coburn, Johnson, and Mitchell

  12. Evan C Says:

It’s fixed now. Rutgers Marketing. Say no more…

  13. Johnny Says:

Yeah, but it still says RU’s starting Gilvydas Biruta instead of Johnson

  14. Johnny Says:

Hoyas win the tip and get the scoring starting with Clark in the post

  15. Mike Says:

Good defense for the Hoyas to start the game, forcing a shot clock violation.

  16. Johnny Says:

Hollis & Austin with 3s make it 8-0. RU Timeout

  17. Johnny Says:

5 straight for Mitchell and GU takes a quick TO.

  18. Johnny Says:

Sims and Lubick enter the game, for Vaughn and Clark

  19. Johnny Says:

Over the back on Thompson, 16:00 timeout, Hoyas up 8-5

  20. Mike Says:

The Hoyas still struggling from the field, but they have done a good job of getting to the boards and pulling down offensive rebounds.

  21. Johnny Says:

At the 12:00 TO, Hoyas up three, Lubick shooting two when we get back.

  22. Mike Says:

The Hoyas started the game 3-4 from the field, now have missed nine of the their last 10 shots. Still, good offensive rebounding earns the Hoyas another trip to the stripe, this time Nate Lubick shooting two.

  23. Johnny Says:

Offensive foul on Wright is his 2nd

  24. Johnny Says:

Hoyas up six, 18-12. RU ball after the 8:00 timeout.

  25. Johnny Says:

4 quick points off the dribble give the Hoyas a six point lead. RU takes their 2nd TO of the first half.

  26. Johnny Says:

Wright hits a three & draws a charge. Hoyas up 27-21 at the 4:00 timeout.

  27. Johnny Says:

Hoyas up 31-25 at the half. Wright and Freeman with 7 each, Clark adds 6

  28. Johnny Says:

Hoyas winning at the half for the first time since the DePaul game

  29. Johnny Says:

Standing ovation for the Famous Drums of Thunder….lots of kids playing drums and things

  30. Johnny Says:

Great ball movement gives Jason Clark an open three – biggest lead of the game = 11

  31. Mike Says:

Great play there, ball never touches the ground, all 5 Hoyas touch the ball, and Clark hits a three. Nice ball movement.

  32. Johnny Says:

Hoyas up by 13, 41-28, and RU takes a 30

  33. Mike Says:

In other Big East news, Louisville overcame an 18 point deficit with 7 minutes left to beat Marquette 71-70.

  34. Mike Says:

Hollis Thompson now has three fouls.

  35. Johnny Says:

Lubick picks up foul #2 and it’s the 12:00 timeout, Hoyas up 47-36

  36. Johnny Says:

Beatty three cuts the Hoya lead to four. So Austin calmly knocks one down of his own.

  37. Mike Says:

12 point run for Rutgers puts the Scarlet Knights back within four, Freeman momentarily silences the crowd with a three.

  38. Mike Says:

Hollis Thompson picks up his fourth foul.

  39. Johnny Says:

At the 4:00 timeout, Hoyas are up 10, 63-53. Georgetown ball on the other end.

  40. Johnny Says:

Strange decision by Rutgers not to foul or play defense – Wright hits a three to make it 12 with under a minute.

  41. Johnny Says:

Clark’s getting beat up out there. 3rd time he’s hit the deck hard

  42. Johnny Says:

Hoyas win their first road Big East game, 74-65 over Rutgers
