Women Fall, Final Four Set

After leading for most of the game, the Lady Hoyas couldn’t hold on, and fell to the #1 Connecticut Huskies 63-68 in the Sweet Sixteen. When asked about competing with the best in women’s basketball, senior Monica McNutt had this to say, “In case you haven’t noticed, our program is on the rise. We are past the point of moral victories. We should be in the Elite Eight.”
In the men’s tournament, the last of the Hoyas was eliminated this weekend as Vernon Macklin and the Florida Gators lost in overtime to Butler in the Elite Eight, 71-74. Macklin had a career-high 25 points in his final collegiate game.
The Final Four is set with VCU set to face Butler at 6:00 on Saturday, and Kentucky and UCONN squaring off after that.

Hoyas’ Season Ends in Chicago, Women Play On

The Georgetown Hoyas’ season came to an end on Friday, as for the second year in a row they lost in their first game of the NCAA Tournament, falling to VCU 56-74.
The Sweet Sixteen is set, and only two Big East teams remain – the two who faced other Big East teams in the Round of 32 – Connecticut, who beat Cincinnati, and Marquette, who beat Syracuse. Pittsburgh is the only #1 team to have lost so far.
The Lady Hoyas opened up their NCAA Tournament with a win on Sunday, beating Princeton 65-49 in College Park. The #5 seeded Hoyas advance to the 2nd round, where they will play the #4 seeded University of Maryland on the Terps’ campus Tuesday night at 7:00.

Hoyas Are 6 Seed in Southwest Region

Selection Sunday was yesterday, and the Georgetown Hoyas were placed as the #6 seed in the Southwest region. They will play on Friday night at 9:50pm against the winner of the 1st round game between USC and VCU.
In the first year with the expanded 68 team tournament, there are a record 11 Big East teams that made the Big Dance. The entire brackets can be found here: 2011 NCAA Tournament [PDF]
On Saturday night, UCONN won their 7th Big East Tournament title, beating Louisville 69-66 at Madison Square Garden.
The Hoyas have landed a new recruit for next season as 6′9” senior Greg Whittington from Oakland Mills made a verbal commitment to Georgetown.

Hoyas Lose, Four Teams Win Automatic Bids

Georgetown fell to Cincinnati on Saturday, losing the season finale 47-69. The loss put the Hoyas in 8th place in the Big East, meaning they earned a bye and will face the winner of the Connecticut-DePaul game on Wednesday at noon.
After beating archrival Syracuse in the Second Round game, the Lady Hoyas fell to #1 Connecticut in the quarterfinals of the Women’s Big East Tournament yesterday, falling 43-59.
Notre Dame beat Connecticut on Saturday at 2:00, giving the Irish a shot at #1 in the conference, but Pittsburgh’s 60-50 victory over Villanova put them at 15-3 earning them the Big East regular season title.
In a winner-take-all battle for the ACC regular season, North Carolina upset Duke on Saturday, winning 81-67.
Four teams have already won their conference tournaments and earned themselves tickets to the Big Dance. Belmont, Indiana State, Morehead State, and Georgetown opponent UNC Asheville all won their respective tournaments and will only be interested in matchups on Selection Sunday.

#1 Falls Again, Green as a Celtic

The Hoyas lost their last home game of the season on Saturday, falling to Syracuse 51-58 on Senior Day. Chris Wright did not play due to his injured hand, and his starting spot was taken by Hollis Thompson.
Jeff Green played in his first game as a Celtic on Saturday, after being traded along with Nenad Krstic just before the trade deadline on Thursday. Jeff wore #8 in Boston’s win over the Clippers, scoring 7 points in his 17 minutes of action. Speaking of his new players, Celtics coach Doc Rivers said, “They both had some bright moments for us and you can see they’ll be really good. I’m going to have to figure out how to use Jeff. I have no idea yet.”
The #1 ranked team in the nation fell again this week, as Duke lost on the road to Virginia Tech, 60-64.
Besides Duke, four other Top 10 teams lost this week, with #4 Pittsburgh losing to Louisville on Sunday, #5 Texas falling to unranked Colorado, #6 San Diego State losing to #7 BYU, and #10 Arizona dropping two to USC and UCLA

Presidents Day Weekend

Presidents Day Weekend was not kind to the Top 5 teams in the country, as #3 Texas lost to Nebraska on Saturday, #4 Pittsburgh fell to St. John’s on Saturday, and #2 Ohio State lost to Purdue on Sunday. Add to that #1 Kansas’ loss to Kansas State last Monday, and it wasn’t pretty for the top of the heap. That’s why #5 Duke moved up to the top spot with the new rankings yesterday.
#9 Georgetown survived the weekend, holding off South Florida on Saturday for a 61-55 victory.
It was All-Star Weekend in the NBA, and Greg Monroe had a good game for the Rookies in the T-Mobile Rookie Challenge, helping his side beat the Sophomores 148-140. Greg scored 14 points, grabbed 8 boards, and got this nice writeup from the Detroit News.
The NBA Development League also had its All-Star game this weekend, and Patrick Ewing, Jr. helped the East earn a 115-108 victory on Saturday night. Check out the highlights to see Pat’s two big rejections (including the Block of the Night) and his reverse alley-oop.

Top 25 Losses, Georgetown Wins

The Hoyas picked up two wins over the week, beating St. John’s at home on Wednesday, and then beating #8 Villanova in Philadelphia on Saturday.
There were tons of losses in the Top 25 over the past week, and four of the top 5 teams in the country picked up a loss as #2 Pittsburgh lost to Notre Dame on Big Monday, #3 Duke lost to St. John’s yesterday in New York, #4 San Diego State lost their first game to Brigham Young on Wednesday, and #5 Connecticut fell to Louisville in double overtime on Saturday.
Also, #8 Villanova and #9 Syracuse each lost twice over the week, and #9 Brigham Young, #11 Missouri, #12 Purdue, #13 Texas A&M, #16 Minnesota, #17 Wisconsin, #18 Washington, #19 Vanderbilt, #20 Illinois, #22 Florida State, #24 Florida, and #25 Michigan State all lost a game this week as well.
#1 Ohio State is the only unbeaten team left in the country, and they narrowly escaped experiencing their first loss with a 58-57 win over Northwestern on Saturday.
In the NBA, Jeff Green continues to do well with the Thunder, as he scored 19 points and hit the game-tying shot in the overtime win against Minnesota, had 13 and 10 against the Wizards, and then scored 23 in the loss to the Heat yesterday afternoon.
Roy Hibbert scored 20 points for the first time since November, but followed up that performance against the Nets with a 2 point showing against Chicago . Expect big changes for the Pacers, though, as coach Jim O’Brien was fired and replaced with interim coach Frank Vogel.
Greg Monroe is continuing to do well with the Pistons as he scored 15 points and grabbed a career-high 17 rebounds in a loss against the Knicks yesterday. DaJuan Summers played 12 minutes in that and scored four points.
In the NBA Development League, Patrick Ewing, Jr. was traded from the Reno Big Horns to the Sioux Falls Skyforce on Tuesday. In his first games with the Skyforce, he scored 13 and grabbed 15 boards and then followed that up with a team leading 14 points in two losses to the Dakota Wizards.

Hoyas Win Last OOC Game, Iverson Returns

The Hoyas won their final out-of-conference game this past week, soundly beating #16 Memphis 86-69. The win puts the Hoyas at 11-1 heading into Big East play this Wednesday at Notre Dame.
There were no upsets of any of the teams in the Top 10 teams in the rankings, with Georgetown and Missouri the only top ten teams to play a ranked opponent. Missouri beat #21 Illinois 75-64.
The Hoyas in the NBA went 1-2 over the Christmas weekend, with Jeff Green the only Hoya victorious. The Oklahoma City Thunder defeated Denver on Christmas 114-106, with Jeff getting 12 points and six assists. Both the Indiana Pacers and the Detroit Pistons lost their games on Boxing Day, falling to Memphis and Chicago, respectively.
In Turkey, Allen Iverson returned to the court after missing two weeks to lead Bestikas to a 24 point win over Pinar Karsiyaka, 89-65. Iverson had 20 points on 5-11 shooting in the game.

Hoyas Win, DaJuan Plays, Iverson Sits

The Hoyas only played one game this past week due to exams, and they came up victorious, defeating Loyola (MD) 99-75 on Saturday.
There were no upsets of any of the Top 5 teams in the rankings, but #6 Kansas State lost to Florida, #7 Tennessee fell twice losing to Oakland and Charlotte, #8 Pittsburgh lost to those same Volunteers, and #9 Baylor were beaten by Gonzaga.
DaJuan Summers saw his first action with the Detroit Pistons in over a month, earning seven minutes in their loss against the Clippers, and then playing nine minutes in the win over the Hornets last night. In the game against New Orleans, DaJuan scored eight points to go with a rebound and steal.
In Turkey, Allen Iverson missed two games this weekend with an unspecified knee injury. Reports say he may be out ten days.

Greg and Pat Making Progress

The Hoyas lost their first game of the season on Thursday night falling to Temple in Philadelphia. They rebounded quickly in an 89-60 win over Appalachian State in which freshman Moses Ayegba got his first minutes and points of the season.
Greg Monroe earned his first NBA start in a loss at the Minnesota Timberwolves. He managed to score 8 points and pick up 15 boards for the Pistons.
Patrick Ewing, Jr. keeps lighting it up for the Reno Bighorns. This weekend, he earned his first professional triple-double scoring 26 points along with 10 rebounds and 11 assists on Friday and then following up that performance with 24 points, 8 rebounds and 5 blocks on Saturday.
Besides the Hoyas loss at Temple, there were two other Top 10 upsets. #3 Pittsburgh lost to #11 Tennessee 76-83 in Pittsburgh, and #7 Michigan State lost to #8 Syracuse 58-72, giving the Spartans their third loss of the season.
