Georgetown vs. South Florida: 02/03/2010
Team | 1 | 2 | T |
South Florida | 26 | 46 | 72 |
Georgetown (#7) | 35 | 29 | 64 |
The Hoyas lost at Verizon Center for the first time this year, falling to South Florida 72-64. The loss comes as a setback for the Boys in Gray, as they were hoping to build momentum off the impressive win over Duke and heading into a weekend clash with Villanova.
The Hoyas started off strong, taking 13 point lead late in the first half thanks to an impressive inside performance from Greg Monroe. Monroe had 14 points at the break, and Austin Freeman added 11 to give the Hoyas a 35-26 halftime advantage.
But Georgetown would start the second half stagnant on offense, and South Florida took full advantage. The Bulls used a 24-5 run spanning over ten minutes to take an eight point lead with under eight minutes to play. The Hoyas cut the lead to two on a number of occasions but never regained the lead, as turnovers and poor free throw shooting kept the Hoyas at arm’s length.
Dominique Jones continued his scoring tear, pouring in 29 points for the Bulls. Monroe had 21 points for the Hoyas before fouling out with three minutes to play. Austin Freeman also ended the game with 21.
It’s a familiar story for the Hoyas, as Georgetown must rebound from a disheartening loss to take on a highly ranked opponent. Georgetown will take on second-ranked Villanova at 12 PM at Verizon Center this Saturday.
