Georgetown vs. UMBC: 03/21/2008
Team | 1 | 2 | T |
UMBC | 22 | 25 | 47 |
Georgetown (#8) | 34 | 32 | 66 |
Hey everybody. This is Johnny checking in from the RBC Center in Raleigh, NC. The Gonzaga vs. Davidson game is at halftime, and it’s a thriller. The local Davidson fans have made the trip to Raleigh in full force, and they are giving the Wildcats a nice home-court advantage. The winner of this game takes on the winner of the Georgetown vs. UMBC game on Sunday, so Hoyas fans looking ahead should take the large Davidson turnout into effect when thinking about who they would rather face.
The team, though, is not looking past their opponents today, the UMBC Retrievers, champions of the America East conference. I’ll check back with more information on the Hoyas game when it’s closer to game time. Until then, watch whatever you can on CBS or CBSSports.com and get yourselves ready for the main event at around 3:00.
March 21st, 2008 at 1:43 pm
Good news that HH is courtside. Good Luck Hoyas.
March 21st, 2008 at 1:43 pm
Speaking of updates, the team has arrived and are sitting on the baseline to my left. Wright, Sapp, and Hibbert are all in a row listening to music, while Ewing, Wallace, Rivers, and Wattad are talking about the game going on now.
March 21st, 2008 at 2:06 pm
I’m watching the Davidson game online since local CBS is showing American. Del Curry’s boy is crazy! You know how many points he ahs Johnny?
March 21st, 2008 at 2:08 pm
Curry has 34 so far, 21 of which coming from behind the arc.
I thought Gonzaga’s Steven Gray was going to be the leading scorer today as he started out 5-5 from three. As I’m typing this, he just hit his seventh right now, so he has 21, and the game is tied at 70. Wow.
March 21st, 2008 at 2:11 pm
34 is a ton, and two guys hitting 7 3s is crazy
March 21st, 2008 at 2:24 pm
Unbelievable. That 37 now? the kid can shoot
March 21st, 2008 at 2:26 pm
There’s still hope for Gonzaga as there’s 37.6 seconds to go, but once Davidson pulled down the rebound, already up 3, the pro-Wildcat crowd went crazy. “Neutral” indeed.
March 21st, 2008 at 2:31 pm
man, it just said curry was 8-10 for threes, crazy
March 21st, 2008 at 2:31 pm
“Stephen Curry! Stephen Curry!” — Davidson fans.
March 21st, 2008 at 2:34 pm
That’ll do it for the first game of the day. Davidson “upset” Gonzaga 82-76 and will face the winner of the Georgetown vs. UMBC game on Sunday. The Hoyas know who they will face if they win, but they’ll have to take care of business here first in half an hour.
March 21st, 2008 at 2:39 pm
Alright, the two teams are warming up, and here are the starting lineups:
For Georgetown, it’s going to be the same five of Wallace, Summers, Freeman, Sapp, and Hibbert.
For UMBC, they’re going to start Greene, Barbosa, Spadafora, Proctor, and Fry.
And the refs today will be Verne Harris, Mike Littlewood, and Douglas Sirmons. Ed Corbett is on standby, whatever that means.
March 21st, 2008 at 2:42 pm
johnny, whats the time on the clock there say, how long til tipoff?
March 21st, 2008 at 2:42 pm
I bet Curry doesn’t hit 40 if they play us…30 maybe but not 40! Plus we’ll just put Doc Jr. on ‘im.
March 21st, 2008 at 2:44 pm
CBS says 3:05 pm ET for the UMBC / Georgetown tip.
March 21st, 2008 at 2:46 pm
horrible horrible offensive foul called in western kentucky game to give drake a chance to win tied at 88
March 21st, 2008 at 2:48 pm
I’m cheering for WKU…that call was AWFUL!
March 21st, 2008 at 2:49 pm
About the refs…I thought Ed Corbet did all his games on standby.
March 21st, 2008 at 2:56 pm
Sorry everybody, I ran out for a second. Here’s Curry’s line:
14-22 FG (63.6%), 8-10 3PT (80.0%), 4-6 FT (66.7%), 2 Assists, and 5 Steals.
For being one of the nation’s best FT shooters, that is clearly the one area he failed in, but otherwise a phenomenal game. 40 points in the opening round of the NCAA Tournament is nothing to complain about.
And the clock here says 7:30 to go, which would probably lead us to the National Anthem and starting lineups.
March 21st, 2008 at 3:08 pm
Alright, Roy wins the tip, and then he scores on the first possession, 2-0 Hoyas.
March 21st, 2008 at 3:09 pm
what the game has started?????
wee are watchign commercials.
March 21st, 2008 at 3:10 pm
that is criminal, i HATE cbs, show us our own goddamn game…you wouldn’t leave american when it was a 15 point game, but you miss the beginninffor no reason.
March 21st, 2008 at 3:10 pm
For those missing the start on TV, Roy scored on a layup, then Wallace hit a three, and then UMBC responded with 4 quick points from Proctor.
March 21st, 2008 at 3:11 pm
any fouls we missed johnny?
March 21st, 2008 at 3:12 pm
cheating on the free throw
March 21st, 2008 at 3:13 pm
One foul on Freeman.
March 21st, 2008 at 3:13 pm
need to take care of the ball hoyas
March 21st, 2008 at 3:14 pm
nice by roy, now get a stop
March 21st, 2008 at 3:16 pm
Foul on Summers, his first, team second, brings us to the first TV timeout, the score tied at 7-7 with 14:33 left in the first half.
March 21st, 2008 at 3:18 pm
lets go pat, give us a lift.
March 21st, 2008 at 3:19 pm
wow, that is a horrible foul on roy, he is ten inches tlaller than the guy, he just stuffs him, no contact at all
March 21st, 2008 at 3:20 pm
roy’s gotta get taht rebound
March 21st, 2008 at 3:21 pm
Now Austin, DaJuan, Roy, and Pat, each have one foul
March 21st, 2008 at 3:21 pm
finally a foul on UMBC, now make the ft
March 21st, 2008 at 3:22 pm
yikes, dont like to see wallace holding that wrist
March 21st, 2008 at 3:24 pm
If you’re courtside Johnny, how does J-Wal look with that wrist?
March 21st, 2008 at 3:24 pm
Johnny, the double dribble was right in front of you. Was it a good call?
March 21st, 2008 at 3:25 pm
11:25, game still tied, now at 12-12, Wallace and Hibbert combining for all the Georgetown points, 8 for John, 4 for Roy. But, with both of them on the bench, they Hoyas will have to find scoring from another source. Georgetown ball after the timeout.
March 21st, 2008 at 3:26 pm
ALSO…CBS’ coverage is atrocious! They made viewers in DC sit through the enitre AU game when it was free throws and a 10-point lead for the last 2:00 of game time which turned into about 14 minutes in real life. Meanwhile, the Davidson game was close for the last 6:00 in the second half. Then they miss the first 3:00 of te HOYAS. Horrendible.
March 21st, 2008 at 3:27 pm
Wallace looks fine, and I couldn’t see the double dribble clearly since it was a little too close to me. Some heads on the bench blocked it.
March 21st, 2008 at 3:27 pm
nice rebound for macklin!
March 21st, 2008 at 3:28 pm
stupid turnovers for us
March 21st, 2008 at 3:29 pm
good, need wallace and roy back
March 21st, 2008 at 3:30 pm
nice repost there, too easy for roy
March 21st, 2008 at 3:30 pm
BOOOOOOYAAAA
March 21st, 2008 at 3:32 pm
austin stops there, not a charge
March 21st, 2008 at 3:32 pm
Charge on Freeman is his 2nd personal.
March 21st, 2008 at 3:32 pm
dammit, gottta get out of their shooters
March 21st, 2008 at 3:32 pm
Jesse
March 21st, 2008 at 3:33 pm
billy packer is an ass, saying he got hit on the arm, the player isnt even complaining
March 21st, 2008 at 3:33 pm
Go Hoyas! Beat Retrievers!
March 21st, 2008 at 3:34 pm
21-17, the Hoyas with the lead and the ball. 7:12 left in the first half, Georgetown with a chance to pull out to a little lead. Three point shooting has been a little off, as the Hoyas started 1-6 from beyond the arc before Jessie Sapp’s three.
March 21st, 2008 at 3:35 pm
NCAA commercial breaks are so long it ridiculous. No team can use fatigue as an exuse.
March 21st, 2008 at 3:36 pm
johnny, help us out, they are showing us other games so we will miss some action
March 21st, 2008 at 3:36 pm
Freeman hits a pull up jumper to give the Hoyas their biggest lead 23-17.
March 21st, 2008 at 3:37 pm
we’re missing action from our game, couldn’t do their look around during the interminable break
March 21st, 2008 at 3:38 pm
thanks we’re backnow
March 21st, 2008 at 3:40 pm
Hoyas are forcing it. Too many stupid turnovers.
March 21st, 2008 at 3:40 pm
stupid turnovers
March 21st, 2008 at 3:40 pm
Sapp and Wright need to STOP giving the ball to the opponent!
March 21st, 2008 at 3:41 pm
Six fouls on UMBC, 5 on Georgetown, Hoyas will be shooting on the next foul.
March 21st, 2008 at 3:41 pm
woosh
March 21st, 2008 at 3:41 pm
If J-Wal’s wrist is bothering him…he should just shoot lefty. That shouldn’t be a problem for him.
March 21st, 2008 at 3:42 pm
3:57 left, Hoyas have their biggest lead of nine, 26-17, on a three by Wallace, he has 11 already. UMBC calls a timeout.
March 21st, 2008 at 3:43 pm
yeah thats what i said mike woosh
March 21st, 2008 at 3:44 pm
Roy should be a little more selfish, not too much more but on the kick-out to Wallace I’ve got no problem but when he kicks and we don’t take the shot and then turn it over I would prefer him go 1 on 3
March 21st, 2008 at 3:45 pm
Nice block by Roy sends us to the official timeout, same situation as before. I don’t know why when UMBC called a timeout they used a full.
March 21st, 2008 at 3:45 pm
The block just then by Roy, he made the same exact play about 10 minutes ago, when they called a foul. I guess the ref’s upset hopes have waned a little.
March 21st, 2008 at 3:47 pm
RE: Johnny
I think the first timeout of the first half is an automatic full…just like the first timeout of the second half. It’s an NCAA rule to help CBS get more commercials in.
I’m glad there are so many commercials, since I’ve been searching for weeks for a car rental company that would pick me up.
March 21st, 2008 at 3:48 pm
great move and composure by roy
March 21st, 2008 at 3:48 pm
nice shot by chris, lets kill them now
March 21st, 2008 at 3:49 pm
how is that a jumpball??? he shoots it!!!
March 21st, 2008 at 3:49 pm
oh, and summers, STOP MISSING DUNKS!!!!
March 21st, 2008 at 3:50 pm
darnit, big 6 point swing there
March 21st, 2008 at 3:52 pm
Thompson uses a timeout with 54.2 left in the half, the Hoyas up 31-20. Wallace missed a three that would have put Georgetown up 17, and UMBC makes a three at the other end to cut the lead to 11.
March 21st, 2008 at 3:52 pm
Well, there goes my pre-game prediction. I said 0 missed dunks for Summers
March 21st, 2008 at 3:52 pm
lol zo
March 21st, 2008 at 3:52 pm
Foul on Barbosa is his second, sending Wallace to the line to shoot 1 and 1.
March 21st, 2008 at 3:54 pm
big big big shot by wright, nice work by wallace to get him the shot!!!
March 21st, 2008 at 3:54 pm
Wright on time!
March 21st, 2008 at 3:54 pm
whoa, what a shot
March 21st, 2008 at 3:55 pm
Buzzer beating three-pointer from Chris Wright puts the Hoyas up 34-22 at the half. Solid performance so far from Georgetown, but they’re going to need to work on the unforced turnovers.
March 21st, 2008 at 3:55 pm
I guess J-Wal didn’t think the 1-and-1 was that important, otherwise he wouldn’t have missed. I need a beverage- see y’all in 15 minutes!
March 21st, 2008 at 4:15 pm
johnny, its a bit late now, but in the arena, did they set up the clock to count down from 15 or 20 minutes?
March 21st, 2008 at 4:15 pm
It is too late. I don’t remember, I never checked.
March 21st, 2008 at 4:16 pm
come on, summers! stupid turnovers
March 21st, 2008 at 4:16 pm
After the two jump balls on Roy, how’d htey miss that one?
March 21st, 2008 at 4:17 pm
incredible!! !how is that not a jump??? its the same thing they called on hibbert
March 21st, 2008 at 4:18 pm
come on hoyas, need to settle down, lets get a good look this time
March 21st, 2008 at 4:20 pm
nice execution there
March 21st, 2008 at 4:21 pm
Summers finally gets on the board, and the Hoyas finally score in the second half. It’s 37-24.
March 21st, 2008 at 4:21 pm
pat bringing so much enegry today, as always, a big lift
March 21st, 2008 at 4:23 pm
gotta get that rebound
March 21st, 2008 at 4:23 pm
Tat might be my favorite play. turnaround jumper from the freethrow line
March 21st, 2008 at 4:24 pm
nice nice nice work boys
March 21st, 2008 at 4:24 pm
We…will…slowly…pull…away.
March 21st, 2008 at 4:25 pm
The three pointer by Freeman gives the Hoyas the biggest lead of the day, 44-26 with 14:40 left, UMBC calls a thirty-second timeout, but the first of the half is stretched to a full. 18 point lead for the Boys in Gray.
March 21st, 2008 at 4:26 pm
Packer says the UMBC coach has called timeout because “he must see the same thing I’m seeing” Great insight by old baldie. And the ultimate shill Jim Nance say, what else, “yes”
March 21st, 2008 at 4:29 pm
Strange foul call there on Jessie, and it’s the 16:00 timeout. Hoyas lead by 18, 46-28, and Spadafora will be shooting two when we get back.
March 21st, 2008 at 4:29 pm
Since Roy almost always has a big game after a poor game, why bring him back in today? Let Macklin play, let Ewing play the 5, save Big Roy for Sunday.
March 21st, 2008 at 4:30 pm
Roy’s gonna have to have a good game on Sunday. I saw Curry’s shooting. Roy’s the only Hoya who shoots better than 80% from three
March 21st, 2008 at 4:31 pm
RE: big A
I liked when Packer gave those weird numbers about the Hoyas’ recent wins…”Against Villanova 47 to 38, West Virginia 54 to 40, and today 56 to 35″ Very good analysis, east for the viewers at home to follow.
Also, Vermont never beat Georgetown in the NCAA tournament, Nance was talking about Syracuse but didn’t mention them. At least his hair looks good.
March 21st, 2008 at 4:32 pm
wow, theres no way thats out on pat
March 21st, 2008 at 4:32 pm
Fiirst, the UMBC band just played the theme from “Family Guy.”
Also, it’s Hodges shooting, not Spadafora.
And @Hoya Gray, Jansen’s 100% too.
March 21st, 2008 at 4:34 pm
Tough floater by Wallace there pushes the lead to 19.
March 21st, 2008 at 4:35 pm
like to see that aggression from roy
March 21st, 2008 at 4:35 pm
Hard foul by Barbosa gets Roy upset, but the refs handle everything. I think Barbosa just didn’t let off of him soon enough.
March 21st, 2008 at 4:37 pm
Georgetown ball, leading 48-29. Roy takes issue with the foul on him after a rebound, but it seems like there were no technicals after the scuffle. 11:54 left in the game, Hoyas up by 19.
March 21st, 2008 at 4:38 pm
nice to see the Hoyas break a press
March 21st, 2008 at 4:40 pm
defensive mistake there, we didnt switch on the screen, gave up an open threepoint look
March 21st, 2008 at 4:41 pm
man, wright cant shoot free throws at all
March 21st, 2008 at 4:41 pm
Wright can shoot, so those freethrows are just mental. Hoyas need to stay focused
March 21st, 2008 at 4:44 pm
we’re looking very sloppy
March 21st, 2008 at 4:46 pm
7:15 remaining in the game, Hoyas up, 50-37, but Sapp’s third personal foul was the seventh foul on the team, so that puts UMBC at the line to shoot 1-1.
March 21st, 2008 at 4:48 pm
now lets get a hoop here
March 21st, 2008 at 4:50 pm
nice tip by roy
March 21st, 2008 at 4:51 pm
now lets go roy, show them how to make the free throws
March 21st, 2008 at 4:51 pm
can i get a score?
March 21st, 2008 at 4:52 pm
Since the 8 minute timeout, Roy has had his hand in all the points since: his two field goals, his one free throw, and the goaltending on the other end.
March 21st, 2008 at 4:52 pm
@Helmet Head, Hoyas lead 55-39 with 5:18 to go.
March 21st, 2008 at 4:53 pm
very nice work there boys
March 21st, 2008 at 4:54 pm
After a brief scare when the Hoyas went scoreless for a few minutes and UMBC chipped away at the lead, the Georgetown has coolly stretched the lead back to 19 - the biggest of the game. Timeout UMBC.
March 21st, 2008 at 4:55 pm
I wonder why the GU athletic department didn’t consider hiring Billy Packer after Esherick. He clearly knows so much more than JTIII. I hope coach and goes back to listen to this game so he can learn about how to manage a game.
March 21st, 2008 at 4:55 pm
Pretty bad fastbreak there.
March 21st, 2008 at 4:57 pm
lets close this one out hoyas
March 21st, 2008 at 4:58 pm
Foul on UMBC’s Hodges puts Freeman at the free throw line to shoot 1-1. Timeout on the floor with 2:49 left in the game, Georgetown up 63-45.
March 21st, 2008 at 4:58 pm
I read the Washington Post earlier this week- about UMBC’s players not being intimidated, since they knew what to expect. Yep, they figured they’d lose by 20- nothing to be nervous about.
March 21st, 2008 at 4:59 pm
i suggest sending hookers over to stephan curry’s hotel room
March 21st, 2008 at 5:00 pm
They just announced the UCONN score in the RBC Center. Anyone watching that game?
March 21st, 2008 at 5:00 pm
for real zo, i mean when will people stop telling jtiii how to coach, i think he’s doing a fine job of it.
March 21st, 2008 at 5:02 pm
no, not yet, ill pull up the march madness on demand after this one ends. looks like uconn down 8
March 21st, 2008 at 5:03 pm
i wonder if ewing is willing to show summers how to dunk the ball
March 21st, 2008 at 5:03 pm
After that nice dunk by Patrick on a scrambled up play, Tyler is set to check in.
March 21st, 2008 at 5:04 pm
Some Hoyas fans behind me just started singing, “Happy Birthday” to Tyler.
March 21st, 2008 at 5:05 pm
Nice to see Tyler and Omar get some minutes.
March 21st, 2008 at 5:06 pm
nice win for the hoyas, i think our players didnt half to work too hard…lets get ready for the davidson game on sunday.
March 21st, 2008 at 5:06 pm
That should do it, final score 66-47 Hoyas. Georgetown will face the Davidson Wildcats right here in two days, on Easter Sunday.
March 21st, 2008 at 5:06 pm
We are…
March 21st, 2008 at 5:07 pm
GEORGETOWN!
