Hoyas and the BCS
By TonyThe Hoyas’ victory last week over Michigan was one of epic proportions. I know the game was over at halftime, but even though Michigan seemed totally over-matched, they’re not a pushover team and they’ll fight for an at-large NCAA tournament bid. Most likely they’ll be a lock for an NIT appearance in their worst-case scenario. Here’s something interesting about Thursday’s result.
In the modern era of Georgetown Basketball - which began in the 1972-73 season when “Papa John” Thompson began his career - the Hoyas have played 107 games against BCS schools (excluding the Big East teams of course). 107 games against teams playing in the big-time conferences - ACC, Big Ten, Big 12, Pac-10, and SEC - including any NCAA and NIT tournament meetings.
The recent victory over Michigan was the third-largest margin of victory against a power conference school and the biggest since 1982-83 when the Hoyas destroyed Wisconsin by 28 points.
The win has historical significance, but not much else. It’s not fair comparing the two conferences as the programs are at different stages of development. But, for the sake of history and posterity, it is worth noting. Take a look at some of the other dominating performances against BCS schools. Also, look at the way those teams finished the season. Maybe there is something about beating a conference-tested team.
