Memphis In-Game Thread

By Johnny

Hey, this is Johnny. We’re about 45 minutes away from the biggest game of the pre-Big East schedule for the Hoyas, as Georgetown is set to take on Memphis at the FedEx Forum, home of the Memphis Grizzlies.

Georgetown and Memphis have some history, but ever since that first matchup in the 1983 NCAA Tournament, it looks like the Hoyas have had the Tigers’ number. Let’s see if they can keep that going this afternoon.

As usual, keep your in-game thoughts coming in the comments.

hi fellas, big game today, need a big win. hoya saxa, baby!

  2. Emily Says:

Let’s go Hoyas! A nice pre-Christmas victory would be a great present.

  3. Hoya Gray Says:

Ho Ho Hoyas!! I’m with Emily, let’s get an early Christmas present from Santa Claus III

  4. Sam Says:

you mean tim allen? i think that is out on dvd

  5. Hoya Gray Says:

Not Santa Clause 3, Santa Claus the Third. Anyway, I take it back after Schulman said the same thing about early Christmas presents on the ESPN intro.

  6. DJ Says:

whats up fellas? lets get a win today, itll make christmas all the sweeter

  7. Johnny Says:

    Here are your starting lineups:
For the Hoyas, the usual five: Wallace, Summers, Sapp, Ewing, and Hibbert.
And for Memphis: Dozier, Dorsey, Anderson, Douglas-Roberts, and Rose

  8. Johnny Says:

Hoyas, dressed all in blue, win the tip, and Wallace makes a floater to start the scoring.

  9. DJ Says:

    nice block roy!

  10. Emily Says:

I take it back too, but because the game is sponsored by Kay Jewelers.

  11. Johnny Says:

Rose hits a three, and it’s 3-2 Memphis

  12. Hoya Gray Says:

    Where’s the over the back?

  13. Sam Says:

come on hibbert, need to score there

  14. DJ Says:

    nice finish pat!!!

  15. Hoya Gray Says:

    What a pass!

  16. DJ Says:

nice backdoor, now make the fts

  17. Emily Says:

Let’s hit our free throws Summers.

  18. Sam Says:

    make your free throws!!!

  19. Johnny Says:

Summers grabs a steal, misses the breakaway layup, but Ewing’s tap in was offensive goaltending

  20. Sam Says:

gotta make layups, gotta take advantage of the tos

  21. Johnny Says:

Rivers puts up an off the dribble 15 footer to tie the game at 7, and then Memphis needs a timeout to inbound the ball (despite no press from the Hoyas)

  22. Emily Says:

Let’s keep up the rebounding Hoyas.

  23. Mike Says:

Memphis has to call a timeout since no player was there to take the inbound pass after the basket by Rivers. Game tied at 7, 14:17 left in the first.

  24. DJ Says:

    nice shot by dajuan!

  25. Hoya Gray Says:

    Nice 3 DaJuan!

  26. DJ Says:

all night long on the backdoor!!!

  27. Johnny Says:

Dorsey picks up his 2nd foul and needs to sit, as the Hoyas have the ball up 12-9

  28. Emily Says:

Come on, keep up the tough D.

  29. Hoya Gray Says:

    I like to see Macklin’s sky-hook falling

  30. DJ Says:

    on the floor maybe?

  31. Mike Says:

No such luck DJ, Hoyas up 3, 14-11, with 11:07 left in the first, Macklin will be shooting free throws on the other side of the official timeout.

  32. DJ Says:

    big big rebound for pat

  33. Sam Says:

come on pat, need to be better there

  34. Johnny Says:

Nice little stretch for the Hoyas: a bucket, a steal and transition layup, and another Memphis turnover.

  35. Sam Says:

    make the fts!

  36. Johnny Says:

Foul on Hibbert leads to the 8:00 timeout, Hoyas up by 7

  37. Mike Says:

Foul on Hibbert, his first, team second, Hoyas lead 24-17, at the timeout 7:46 left in the half.

  38. DJ Says:

i think the foul was on the floor, so we’ll live with it, memphis already has their big guy in foul trouble

  39. E Says:

The Hoyas need to start making these transition layups. When we miss it allows them to run, and it takes points away from us. Have to do better.

  40. Hoya Gray Says:

That was a quick 5 second call

  41. Sam Says:

come on hoyas, take care of the ball.

  42. DJ Says:

    all night long!

  43. Hoya Gray Says:

Looks like they shoved Wallace down after the back door, leading to a 5 on 4 for Memphis

  44. Johnny Says:

Great take from Sapp leads to a three point play opportunity

  45. DJ Says:

big big play for sapp, keep cutting on them, they dont defend at all

  46. Mike Says:

Foul on Wallace, his first, team fourth.

  47. Johnny Says:

Wallace is upset about that call against him. You never see J-Wal complain, so you know something’s up.

  48. Emily Says:

    Nice Jessie.

  49. Hoya Gray Says:

What a shot from Memphis. Double clutch garbage off the backboard.

  50. Mike Says:

Foul on Wallace, his second, team fifth.

  51. Mike Says:

Foul on Summers, his first, team sixth, Rose makes the basket, will be shooting one after the break. Hoyas still lead 35-29, 3:45 left in the first.

  52. Mike Says:

Seven point for Memphis, the Hoyas use their 30 second timeout with 2:31 left. Hoyas still lead by one.

  53. Sam Says:

come on hoyas, do better, lets get a hoop here now

  54. E Chvotkin Says:

Summers right side deep 3 to stop the 7-0 memphis run, 38-34. That was HUGE

  55. Hoya Gray Says:

And then a mysterious foul gives Memphis 2 points back

  56. Sam Says:

    dammit

  57. Johnny Says:

Memphis 3 gives the Tigers their first lead in a long time, but on the other end, Ewing will be shooting free throws

  58. Johnny Says:

Hoyas head into the half losing 43-40, after a disappointing end of the half.

  59. E Chvotkin Says:

40-43 at the half, time to adjust

  60. Mike Says:

Hoyas close the half pretty poorly, and go into the locker room trailing by 3, 43-40, at the half.

  61. Emily Says:

Ok Hoyas. Let’s start the second half with some hoops and some good half-court defense.

  62. Sam Says:

come on hoyas, lets go here

  63. Johnny Says:

To start the second half, Dozier misses a two

  64. Johnny Says:

After a steal by Summers, Calipari gets called for a techincal

  65. DJ Says:

calipari is a slimeball. throw him out

  66. Sam Says:

    Hibbert is playing horribly today

  67. Sam Says:

    refs are not calling anything

  68. DJ Says:

wright makes the layup this time, big play

  69. Johnny Says:

Great steal by Wright, leads to a fast break layup.

  70. Mike Says:

Hoyas call timeout out a steal and layup by Wright, hoyas take a one-point lead, 46-45 with 15:37 remaining in the game

  71. Mike Says:

Excuse me, AFTER a steal and layup.

  72. Mike Says:

Foul on Freeman, his first and the first of the half on Georgetown. Official timeout, Hoyas up by one, with 14:32 left.

  73. DJ Says:

come hoyas, gotta get some defensive rebounds.

  74. Johnny Says:

Hard foul by Anderson on Summers as he was going to get an easy bucket

  75. Sam Says:

free throws and missed layups are killing me

  76. Sam Says:

we are in huge trouble now

  77. Johnny Says:

Memphis goes up 54-46 and Thompson needs a timeout

  78. Mike Says:

After the goaltending on Wallace’s backdoor layup, the Hoyas trail by 6, 12 minute timeout, 11:21 left.

  79. Johnny Says:

Nice defense by the Hoyas: force a jump, and then on the ensuing Memphis inbound, forces the Tigers to use a timeout

  80. DJ Says:

lets go hoyas, keep up the d

  81. Hoya Gray Says:

Where on earth was the foul there?

  82. Mike Says:

3rd foul on Hibbert, team’s 4th of the half

  83. DJ Says:

nice play by freeman need a stop here

  84. Mike Says:

Time out with 7:31 left, Hoyas down by 9, Georgetown ball when we come back.

  85. DJ Says:

we gotta start a run soon,

  86. DJ Says:

    ROY, come on now!

  87. Sam Says:

    we’re done

  88. Sam Says:

    and still missing free throws

  89. Sam Says:

    team is falling apart

  90. Johnny Says:

After Memphis steps out of bounds, Rivers runs the baseline, for another turnover. Hoyas can’t do much right this half.

  91. Mike Says:

Hoyas ball, trailing by 15 with 3:37 remaining in the game. This one looks out of reach.

  92. Johnny Says:

Hoyas aren’t fouling, so looks like it’s over.

  93. Johnny Says:

There’s the final score: 71-85. Hoyas lose the first of the season. Hoyas gotta get back home and start preparing for American.
