Georgetown vs. Syracuse: 01/21/2008

| Team | 1 | 2 | OT | T |
| Syracuse | 29 | 31 | 2 | 62 |
| Georgetown (#9) | 36 | 24 | 4 | 64 |

Hey everyone, Johnny here at the Verizon Center. It’s crazy here, and we’re still over half an hour to tipoff. There was a line outside the arena stretching longer than I have ever seen here in Chinatown, and that was over an hour and a half before game time. Let’s see if the fans can keep up their good work.
Tonight’s opposition is the Syracuse Orange, the arch-nemisis of the Georgetown Hoyas. We gave you our stats preview, we gave you CuseAdelphia’s inside scoop, and now all that’s left is to wait until 7:00 PM.
Here are your starting lineups for tonight’s Big East battle.
For the Hoyas, the same five you’ve grown accustomed to: Wallace, Sapp, Freeman, Summers, and Hibbert.
For the Orange, it’s gonna be Greene, Flynn, Harris, Onuaku, and Jardine.
And the refs for tonight’s game are going to be John Cahill, Jim Burr, and Ted Hillary.
Keep your in-game thoughts coming, and hopefully we can see the Boys in Gray further solidify their place on top of the Big East Conference.

January 21st, 2008 at 6:52 pm
With 5 minutes till the National Anthem and starting lineups, the fans are still piling in. While the student sections are filled with gray shirts, there are a lot of orange ones in the Verizon Center too.
January 21st, 2008 at 6:54 pm
Also looks like the Hoya had a BEAT CUSE insert that all the students are proudly showing now that the Orange are warming up.
January 21st, 2008 at 6:55 pm
Come on Hoyas, let’s beat these guys.
January 21st, 2008 at 7:03 pm
Tip goes to the Orange who get a dunk on the first possession of the game.
January 21st, 2008 at 7:04 pm
On Georgetown’s first possession, Austin Freeman hits a three.

January 21st, 2008 at 7:09 pm
At the 16 minute timeout, Hoyas are trailing the Orange 7-5.
January 21st, 2008 at 7:09 pm
You’re playing a little sloppy Hoyas. Pick it up!
January 21st, 2008 at 7:13 pm
There’s Jonathan’s first three in a few games.

There was a nice alleyoop from Wallace to Ewing on the fast break.
January 21st, 2008 at 7:18 pm
Nice DaJuan!! Now let’s settle down.
January 21st, 2008 at 7:18 pm
After turning it over on his last break, Wallace takes this one strong, and gets a layup and a foul.
With 10:40 to go, we’re at the 12 minute timeout, Georgetown up one, 17-16
January 21st, 2008 at 7:22 pm
Patrick flops, and Burr falls for it. Offensive foul on Syracuse.
January 21st, 2008 at 7:23 pm

January 21st, 2008 at 7:24 pm

January 21st, 2008 at 7:34 pm
Tyler Crawford is checking in for the first time.
January 21st, 2008 at 7:34 pm
Nice boxing out Hoyas.
January 21st, 2008 at 7:34 pm
I love Tyler!
January 21st, 2008 at 7:35 pm
Jim Burr must have something against Jonathan Wallace. That’s the second time J-Wal’s complained about a call. And he never complains. So I’m assuming Burr is doing something wrong.
January 21st, 2008 at 7:38 pm
Assuming Burr did something wrong is always a good move.
January 21st, 2008 at 7:39 pm
Nothing at all. Not even net. That was the purest shot of the season for Wallace, and it puts the Hoyas up 8.
January 21st, 2008 at 7:40 pm
Repeat performance, now Hoyas up 9
January 21st, 2008 at 7:40 pm
He tried for 3 threes in a row, and it didn’t fall. I was glad to see him take that though. I think he’s out of his slump.
January 21st, 2008 at 7:42 pm
Nice ovation as Crawford takes a seat.
January 21st, 2008 at 7:42 pm
way to be strong ROY
January 21st, 2008 at 7:45 pm
After Syracuse’s three to cut the lead to 7, the ball bounced out of bounds. But the refs didn’t blow the whistle, and Rivers had to dribble down court and force a shot with three seconds less than he should have had.
Regardless, Hoyas up 36-29 at the half.
January 21st, 2008 at 7:45 pm
Seven’s not bad. Not too great, but not bad either. Let’s take over in the 2nd.
January 21st, 2008 at 7:49 pm
Johnny, not only did the ball bounce around after Syracuse’s final shot, but Harris was out of bounds intentionally keeping the Hoyas from getting the ball since the clock was rolling. JT3 was yelling at the refs to blow the whistle and they didn’t. The shot went in with about 9 second left, Hoyas couldn’t in bounds until about 4.5 left. The refs weren’t paying attention, BUT I think the Hoyas had their “Use it or lose it” timeout. Somebody could’ve taken the refs mistakes out of the equation…always a good plan.
January 21st, 2008 at 8:01 pm
To start the second half, the Hoyas go into Roy who’s fouled.
January 21st, 2008 at 8:02 pm
You don’t usually say this so early in the game, but– big free throws Roy!
January 21st, 2008 at 8:03 pm
hahahahahah
January 21st, 2008 at 8:04 pm
nice take jessie!
January 21st, 2008 at 8:06 pm

January 21st, 2008 at 8:07 pm
Foul on Hibbert puts the Orange to the line, at the 16 minute timeout with the Hoyas only up five, 40-35.
January 21st, 2008 at 8:07 pm
Come on Hoyas, step it up!
January 21st, 2008 at 8:12 pm
Another Syracuse charge thanks to Ewing. Hoyas ball up 4 with 15 minutes to go.
January 21st, 2008 at 8:13 pm
nice play!
January 21st, 2008 at 8:14 pm
That’s Austin’s 3rd foul there. Summers checks back in.
January 21st, 2008 at 8:14 pm
That’s too easy, Hoyas. Defense!
January 21st, 2008 at 8:15 pm
The Orange are outhustling the Hoyas right now. They need to step up their play or they’re gonna be in trouble.
January 21st, 2008 at 8:16 pm
That shouldn’t have been a shooting foul. And that first freethrow should have fallen. Man, luck’s not with the Hoyas right now.
January 21st, 2008 at 8:20 pm
great play RIVERS!!
January 21st, 2008 at 8:20 pm
Jeremiah Rivers just pulled down an offensive board dribbled it out, then drove right back in for two. Hoyas up 44-40
January 21st, 2008 at 8:21 pm

January 21st, 2008 at 8:25 pm

January 21st, 2008 at 8:27 pm
Another three by Flynn and he has 24 points, the Syracuse has a 4 point lead, and Georgetown needs a timeout.
January 21st, 2008 at 8:28 pm
Come on, Hoyas. Get right back in it.
January 21st, 2008 at 8:28 pm
There’s another three for Wallace, and he’s got 15 points.
January 21st, 2008 at 8:29 pm

January 21st, 2008 at 8:42 pm
Hoyas are down 5 with 3:55 left and Patrick Ewing shooting 1 and 1.
January 21st, 2008 at 8:43 pm
Same score, timeout Georgetown. 3:06 to play.
January 21st, 2008 at 8:45 pm
Roy’s freethrows cut the score to 3 with 2:54 remaining
January 21st, 2008 at 8:46 pm
WAY TO GO PAT!!!
January 21st, 2008 at 8:47 pm
Great defensive play by Patrick gets the Hoyas the ball and makes the crowd go ecstatic. But then there’s a charge on Freeman on the ensuing play. 6 fouls on the Hoyas. This one could come down to freethrows.
January 21st, 2008 at 8:48 pm
JESSIE!!!!
January 21st, 2008 at 8:48 pm
Just like Connecticut
January 21st, 2008 at 8:49 pm
WOW. Amazing defense by Rivers leads to a steal by the Hoyas and a bucket for Sapp to tie the score at 60 with a minute left.
January 21st, 2008 at 8:49 pm
Can i say RIVERS!!!! and JESSIEE!!!! any more right now?
January 21st, 2008 at 8:50 pm
Alright Hoyas, tough defense now.
January 21st, 2008 at 8:51 pm
Big screen set on Rivers gives Flynn an open three. He misses it, but the Orange grab the rebound and call timeout from the floor.
January 21st, 2008 at 8:53 pm
With a 4 second difference, looks like Syracuse wants to run out the clock.
January 21st, 2008 at 8:53 pm

January 21st, 2008 at 8:55 pm
Amazing defense by Rivers gives the Hoyas the ball back with 3 seconds, but Austin misses the three. OVERTIME!
January 21st, 2008 at 8:57 pm
Hibbert is jumping for the overtime tip. But Syracuse gets it.
January 21st, 2008 at 8:58 pm
Careful with the ball, Hoyas
January 21st, 2008 at 8:59 pm
2 missed free throws by Onuaku and a big rebound by Roy. Still tied at 60.
January 21st, 2008 at 9:00 pm
Sapp shooting 2 and the Hoyas will be shooting 2 for the rest of this one. Orange still in 1 and 1 as Hoyas only have 7 team fouls.
January 21st, 2008 at 9:02 pm
First Georgetown lead since 46-45. And a turnover by Syracuse gives the Hoyas the ball with 3:12 up 2
January 21st, 2008 at 9:03 pm
what foul???
January 21st, 2008 at 9:04 pm
After two more missed freethrows Syracuse gets the offensive rebound, but Summers and Freeman steal it back. Hoyas ball up 2, 2:02 to play. Timeout Georgetown.
January 21st, 2008 at 9:08 pm

After DaJuan misses a three, Syracuse grabs the board and calls timeout at midcourt. Syracuse is down two with 10.8 to go in overtime.
January 21st, 2008 at 9:12 pm
RIVERS!!!!
January 21st, 2008 at 9:13 pm
Rivers again with excellent defense and Flynn misses the last second three. Final Score: Georgetown 64 - Syracuse 62.
After going 9-15, Flynn goes 0-8 down the stretch thanks to excellent defense from Jeremiah Rivers.
In overtime: 4-2 Hoyas. 2 free throws for each side and a turnaround jumper from the foul line for Roy turns out to be the game winner.
January 21st, 2008 at 9:24 pm
I don’t want to sound like a sore loser, but there were three terrible calls late in the game that definitely influenced the outcome. The tick tack foul on Syracuse in the corner, Flynn driving baseline and getting mugged with no call, and on the Donte Green turnover, the Georgetown player first fouled him and then stepped out of bounds.
Jay Bilas and Bill Raftery both agreed those calls were wrong. When is the Big East going to get real officials and make guys like Jim Burr and Tim Higginson hang them up.
That was an absolutely amazing game ruined by that.
January 21st, 2008 at 11:10 pm
One can always point to the officials, but both teams had opportunities to put it away. The refs do have the benefit of instant replay at their disposal for some calls, which they did use to evaluate the accuracy of the shot clock and game clock. I’m just glad the W fell our way tonight
January 22nd, 2008 at 12:30 am
Jameson from CuseAdelphia has a point that the refs missed calls but I think they were consistently bad for both teams. They let a lot of bludgeoning go on and then called touch fouls which has no effect on the game. Case in point, the first foul of the game on Roy when he came out to help on the guard. Also, Cuse’s Onuaku missed 4 critical free throws.
By the way, the refs name is Tim Higgins not Higginson. We hope to never have to put up with Tim Higgins son as a ref.
January 22nd, 2008 at 12:59 pm
Oh I’ll definitely agree Syracuse blew that game from the line, but the refs also cost them three or four chances to win that game. Bilas and Raftery said on national TV the refs messed up three calls that went against Syracuse in the last two minutes of regulation.
It’s just a shame it ended like that.
