It was another chapter in the epic series between the two best teams in the history of the Big East Conference, as Georgetown defeated Syracuse 64-62 in overtime in front of a capacity crowd at Verizon Center. Syracuse freshman Jonny Flynn missed a three-pointer at the buzzer that would have won the game. The contested 30-footer rattled around the rim before bouncing out and sending the home crowd into a frenzy. The Hoyas remained perfect at home and remained the only team in the Big East with only one loss.
Throughout the first half it looked like it was going to be a matter of time before Georgetown pulled away, as they led by as many as 11 points, behind 12 first half points from Jonathan Wallace. After the intermission, Georgetown went cold and Syracuse got hot. Flynn led all scorers with 24 points, and the Orange led by seven points with less than five minutes to play. Jessie Sapp scored five straight points for the Hoyas in the final minutes as Georgetown closed the second half on a 9-2 run to tie the score. Both teams missed potential game-winning shots at the end of regulation and the game went to overtime.
In OT, Sapp made two free throws, and Roy Hibbert made a foul line jumper to put the Hoyas up by four. Donte Greene made two free throws after being fouled on a three-point attempt, and the Hoyas missed a shot on their final possession, setting up the last chance for Syracuse.
Georgetown now has five days off before traveling to West Virginia on Saturday. That game is scheduled for 7:00 pm.
