With a majority of the DC Metro Area blanketed in two feet of snow, the Georgetown Hoyas rebounded from a disappointing midweek loss to defeat Villanova 103-90. Thousands of Hoya faithful were forced to watch the game from home due to the blizzard, but Georgetown gave their snowed-in fans something to cheer about, handing the Wildcats their first conference loss of the season.
The Hoyas jumped out the gates early, using an offensive barrage to build a substantial lead. Jason Clark and Austin Freeman connected on six of their seven first half three-point attempts, helping Georgetown extend to a 23 point late in the half. The Hoyas would lead the Wildcats 50-31 at the intermission.
After the break, Scottie Reynolds began to assert himself offensively. He was only 1-5 in the first 20 minutes, but scored 10 of Villanova’s first 13 points to cut the lead to 13 early in the second half. However, every time Villanova tried to take the lead down to single digits, the Hoyas responded with key stops or critical baskets. The Wildcats could never get within striking distance, and Georgetown held on for a comfortable, if not commanding, 13 point win.
Austin Freeman led all scorers with 25 points, and Jason Clark had a career-high 24 points, including a scorching 6-7 from beyond the arc. Greg Monroe also added 19 points, eight rebounds, and six assists to help the Hoyas improve to 17-5 and 7-4 in Big East play. Scottie Reynolds and Corey Fisher each had 24 points in a losing effort, as the Wildcats now fall to 20-2 on the season and 9-1 in the conference, with a difficult game against the West Virginia Mountaineers looming on Big Monday.
The Hoyas hit the road to face off against a pair of teams from the bottom half of the conference. Georgetown will take on Providence at the Dunkin’ Donuts Center Tuesday at 7 PM, followed up with a rare Sunday afternoon game against the Rutgers Scarlet Knights at The RAC in Piscataway, NJ. That game is slated for 4 PM.
