Georgetown vs. Cincinnati: 02/23/2008
Team | 1 | 2 | T |
Cincinnati | 27 | 26 | 53 |
Georgetown (#12) | 34 | 39 | 73 |
Hey everybody, Johnny here at the Verizon Center. We’re a little less than half an hour away from the opening tip in this critical Big East match for the Hoyas as they take on the Bearcats of Cincinnati.
After splitting two games this weekend, the Hoyas are tied in the loss column of the Big East standings with Louisville, Connecticut, and Notre Dame. Every game is important as we come down the stretch of the conference season, so we’ll have to see what the Boys in Gray have to offer us this afternoon.
I’ll be back with the starting lineups and officials in a few. In the meantime, keep your thoughts coming in the comments.
February 23rd, 2008 at 11:36 am
We’re gonna need a big performance today to get the momentum going into March.
February 23rd, 2008 at 11:40 am
Come on Hoyas, I missed most of the games last weekend, but I wasn’t too happy with what I was seeing. Let’s step it up today!
February 23rd, 2008 at 11:42 am
Here are your starting lineups for today’s game:
For the Hoyas - Wallace, Summers, Freeman, Sapp, and Hibbert
For the Bearcats - Gentry, Vaugn, Davis, Hrycaniuk, and Williamson
And the refs today are gonna be Pat Driscoll, Earl Walton, and Paul Janssen.

From what I see and hear from some of the fans here, there is a lot of confetti in the stands, apparently remnants from the Spice Girls concert here at the Verizon Center on Thursday.
Let’s see if the Hoyas wannabe Scary good like Coach has said they can be.
February 23rd, 2008 at 12:01 pm
Pretty bad spice girls references there
February 23rd, 2008 at 12:02 pm
Verizon Center doesn’t look too crowded yet. Upper deck has got some fans, but the student section’s not packed, and there are plenty of empty seats here in Chinatown.
February 23rd, 2008 at 12:04 pm
Sounds like it’s back to Zombie Nation here before the tipoff. The Villanova game wasn’t good enough to keep “Welcome to the Jungle”
February 23rd, 2008 at 12:05 pm
Hoyas lose the jump, and there’s a foul on Freeman on the first possession.
February 23rd, 2008 at 12:06 pm
Cincinnati gets into a press after the two freethrows, but the Hoyas break it pretty easily. Jon’s baby floater rims out, still 2-0
February 23rd, 2008 at 12:09 pm
they fouled Dajuan just as hard.
February 23rd, 2008 at 12:09 pm
Great body control by Summers on that one
February 23rd, 2008 at 12:10 pm
Summers gets a layup from a nice feed from Freeman to put the Hoyas on the board: 4-2 Cincinnati.
February 23rd, 2008 at 12:10 pm
thats 2!!`
February 23rd, 2008 at 12:11 pm
Only 3 and a half minutes in and the Hoyas have already forced two shot clock violations.
February 23rd, 2008 at 12:12 pm
No shot, but Roy is still fouled, which leads to the 16 minute timeout with the game tied at 4.
February 23rd, 2008 at 12:15 pm
Jeremiah Rivers checking in for Sapp.
February 23rd, 2008 at 12:16 pm
I like the way they’ve been calling this one.
February 23rd, 2008 at 12:16 pm
Nice hustle boys!
February 23rd, 2008 at 12:16 pm
Again.
February 23rd, 2008 at 12:18 pm
Roy blocked a shot, dove on the floor to save it, leading to a fast break and three point attempt on two consecutive plays.
Austin missed, but Jon got his, to make the score 10-4 and Cincinnati Coach Mick Cronin needs a timeout.
February 23rd, 2008 at 12:18 pm
That’s how the Hoyas need to play. We have a fast team, but we can’t just run for the sake of running. Good defense leads to transition baskets. You need D to get O
February 23rd, 2008 at 12:19 pm
That block was right in front of me. Clearly all ball. I dont’ know what the ref was watching, since he was also right in front of me - almost same line of sight. Pat was just unlucky there.
February 23rd, 2008 at 12:20 pm
yuck
February 23rd, 2008 at 12:21 pm
Didn’t they knock that out of his hands?
February 23rd, 2008 at 12:22 pm
Something wrong with the shotclock here. Hoyas crossed with 22 on the clock.
February 23rd, 2008 at 12:24 pm
Looks like they added 4 seconds back to the clock.
February 23rd, 2008 at 12:27 pm
Crazy shot by Sapp. I guess that’s how he likes it, though, 15-9 Hoyas
February 23rd, 2008 at 12:28 pm
more blocks!!
February 23rd, 2008 at 12:30 pm
As the Hoyas struggle to break the press - or should I say as Rivers struggles to break the press - Coach Thompson calls a timeout.
February 23rd, 2008 at 12:31 pm
nice teake jessie
February 23rd, 2008 at 12:32 pm
Another steal for the Hoyas leads to a foul on the Bearcats. Freeman will be shooting two after the 8 minute timeout, Hoyas up 17-11
February 23rd, 2008 at 12:36 pm
Another timeout by Cincinnati, and the Hoyas are now up 19-11 thanks to those 2 Freeman freethrows
February 23rd, 2008 at 12:37 pm
jwall!!
February 23rd, 2008 at 12:38 pm
Nice job breaking the press that time!
February 23rd, 2008 at 12:39 pm
Basket and a foul: Summers puts the Hoyas up 11 with a chance to make it 12 and Cincinnati takes another timeout.
February 23rd, 2008 at 12:40 pm
Biggest lead for the Hoyas, as DaJuan’s freethrow makes it 25-13
February 23rd, 2008 at 12:40 pm
wow!!!
February 23rd, 2008 at 12:41 pm
It’s sloppy, but I don’t care so much this time. We get the ball back.
February 23rd, 2008 at 12:42 pm
There’s Roy’s first field goal attempt and his first bucket.
February 23rd, 2008 at 12:42 pm
kinda wish we got the dunk instead, thogu
February 23rd, 2008 at 12:43 pm
Hoyas have been doing a great job on the boards, grabbing 9 rebounds to Cincinnati’s 4. But the turnovers have got to stop.
February 23rd, 2008 at 12:43 pm
Couple fouls on the Hoyas and it’s not with 4 minute timeout, Hoyas leading 29-16.
February 23rd, 2008 at 12:44 pm
the press break turnovers I can take because it looks like we’ve been doing better so far. But the sloppy passes in the offense do need to stop, you’re right about that
February 23rd, 2008 at 12:47 pm
closer by crawford. stil lnot close enoug
February 23rd, 2008 at 12:47 pm
Great work by Sapp to get that shot up. Earned himself 2 shots
February 23rd, 2008 at 12:49 pm
He made the first of a 1-1! Go Pat!
February 23rd, 2008 at 12:50 pm
Hoyas have stretched the lead to 14, 32-18 with 2:19 in the half.
February 23rd, 2008 at 12:52 pm
And in a flash it’s 32-25, a 7 point Bearcat run
February 23rd, 2008 at 12:52 pm
gotta make that one roy
February 23rd, 2008 at 12:54 pm
Shotclock?
February 23rd, 2008 at 12:55 pm
Clearly a shotclock violation there as the horn went off before the half. I don’t understand how they missed it, especially with Coach all over them. Now they’re looking at the tape, but in the meantime it’s 34-27 at the half.
February 23rd, 2008 at 12:55 pm
Looks like they’re not doing anything about it, and the Bearcats got two free points, while the Hoyas lose a possession. Unacceptable officiating.
February 23rd, 2008 at 1:10 pm
Well, we’re just about ready to start the second half with the Hoyas leading 34-27. Despite the poor refereeing in the last seconds, the Hoyas are still responsible for the mini-collapse, letting their 14 point lead slip to 7. Let’s see how they start the second.
February 23rd, 2008 at 1:10 pm
Johnny, you got any halftime stats for us at home? Like how many blocks/steals?
February 23rd, 2008 at 1:11 pm
@Hoya Gray
Hoyas had 5 blocks and 5 steals. Roy had 4 blocks on his own, and Sapp and Ewing split the steals 2 and 3 respectively
February 23rd, 2008 at 1:13 pm
nice shot jesse!
February 23rd, 2008 at 1:14 pm
I like that aggression down low from DaJuan. haven’t seen too much of that this season
February 23rd, 2008 at 1:15 pm
Freeman layup pushes the lead back to 10, and a foul on Hrycaniuk is his 3rd, team 3rd. Hoyas have 0 fouls in the 2nd half.
February 23rd, 2008 at 1:16 pm
Roy gets his 1st points of the second half. He’s wearing a cutoff t-shirt this half as opposed to his standard undershirt. Maybe he’s looking to be more aggressive again.
February 23rd, 2008 at 1:17 pm
There’s a bit of a melee in front of the Cincinnati bench as Ewing and some players were getting into it. Coach is out there talking with the refs.
February 23rd, 2008 at 1:20 pm
@Hoya Gray
More stats from the half:
Roy was only 1 of 2, he’s already matched that in the second as he’s 2 of 4 from the field.
Georgetown forced Cincinnati into 11 turnovers in the opening 20, while the Hoyas only turned it over 6 times.
Also, the Hoyas were only 4-11 from downtown. Take away Wallace’s shooting and they shot 22% from 3. But without Vaughn, Cincinnati wouldn’t have any 3 balls.
February 23rd, 2008 at 1:28 pm
fouled shooting 3! we dont get that one too foten
February 23rd, 2008 at 1:29 pm
JEREMEIAH!!
February 23rd, 2008 at 1:29 pm
Big breakaway dunk by Rivers brings the crowd to their feet and leads to a Cincinnati timeout, Hoyas up 46-33.
February 23rd, 2008 at 1:31 pm
Because it was time for the fan of the game, no one at the Verizon Center has seen a replay of Jeremiah’s jam. Still, everyone’s pretty happy that the lead is back to 13
February 23rd, 2008 at 1:34 pm
Nice aggressive move by Roy as he drives baseline and gets a bucket
February 23rd, 2008 at 1:35 pm
DaJuan can’t buy a three today
February 23rd, 2008 at 1:35 pm
Hoyas up 15 at the 12 minute timeout, Roy shooting two when we get back.
February 23rd, 2008 at 1:41 pm
I wonder what he did there.
February 23rd, 2008 at 1:42 pm
I think the refs are looking to call fouls now. It’s 9 personals on Cincinnati and only 4 on the Hoyas.
February 23rd, 2008 at 1:44 pm
That’s another moving screen on the Bearcats. They’re trying really hard to get Vaughn free. He hit his last three with very little room to work, and he’s clearly their key offensive weapon. But they can’t shake the tough Hoyas defense from Rivers and Sapp.
February 23rd, 2008 at 1:45 pm
See what I mean? Off the ball hand check or hold or something on Freeman. They just need to reach the fouls quota for the Hoyas.
February 23rd, 2008 at 1:46 pm
Nice quick press break and Pat wanted to slam one down on top of Hrycaniuk like his dad would, but he got fouled and couldn’t reach the rim.
February 23rd, 2008 at 1:47 pm
woulda loike to seen the slam
February 23rd, 2008 at 1:47 pm
Pat just screamed “Short!” after his second freethrow. It swished, and he looked silly.
February 23rd, 2008 at 1:50 pm
Dan Steingberg would be proud. There’s a Student Costume Contest before the St. John’s game on Wednesday. Winner gets tickets to the Big East Tournament.
February 23rd, 2008 at 1:51 pm
we encourgaing pikachu and scooby now? okay i guess
February 23rd, 2008 at 1:51 pm
Roy’s checking back in. So far he’s got 5 blocks. His career high is 6 which he’s gotten several times, most recently, his last game against Providence. Let’s see if he can match that today.
February 23rd, 2008 at 1:52 pm
I like that. Fancy stuff doesn’t work. Land and make an easy play. Good work Pat!
February 23rd, 2008 at 1:54 pm
Pat just fouled out with 6 points. Nice performance from Patrick, and the students have just started a “Patrick Ewing! Patrick Ewing” chant for #33.
February 23rd, 2008 at 1:55 pm
With those 2 free throws, Roy becomes the fourth Hoya to reach double figures.
February 23rd, 2008 at 1:56 pm
The crowd’s onto it now. They’ve started booing the fouls on every possession on both sides of the court.
February 23rd, 2008 at 1:56 pm
cant they let em play adn end this game??
February 23rd, 2008 at 1:58 pm
Sapp had so much time he could have put the ball down and tied his shoes and then shot it. Guranateed on that one
February 23rd, 2008 at 2:02 pm
With all these whistles and foul shots slowing this game down, I’m pretty glad Coach Cronin used so many of his timeouts so early in the game.
February 23rd, 2008 at 2:05 pm
i like that play! nice pass by wallace!
February 23rd, 2008 at 2:06 pm
“Bryon Jansen! Bryon Jansen!” — students.
But it’s Wattad who heads to the bench first.
February 23rd, 2008 at 2:06 pm
And now Jansen’s checking in as well.
February 23rd, 2008 at 2:07 pm
Loud ovation now. Half is for Roy coming out, and half is for Bryon coming in.
February 23rd, 2008 at 2:08 pm
“Next game is on Wednesday against St. John’s. Make sure to wear gray to the game.”
What about the costume contest?
February 23rd, 2008 at 2:09 pm
Out of town score here: Villanova beat UCONN 67-65, making Georgetown’s quest for the Big East title a little bit easier. Not too much easier, but a little bit.
February 23rd, 2008 at 2:10 pm
You gotta like seeing that. Jansen fouls Bishop shooting 3 and he helps him up off the floor. That’s why Jansen’s on the team, aggressive play on defense. In practice, that play makes Wallace and Sapp tougher.
February 23rd, 2008 at 2:16 pm
The students here were a little confused. As the Cincinnati player fouled out, they wanted to chant “Left Right Left Right” until he sat down. But Rivers was shooting free throws. As he’s shooting, they scream “SIT DOWN!!” then “WHOOSH!”
February 23rd, 2008 at 2:16 pm
And the clock didn’t start on that inbound, so Coach was screaming at the table to finish this game.
February 23rd, 2008 at 2:18 pm
Is that an impressive enough win for Gottlieb? Blowing out the #6 team in the conference by 20? I’m still upset by that guy.
February 23rd, 2008 at 2:19 pm
There’s the final score, 73-53. Not sure if the press conference will be too interesting after that draaaaaawn out second half. But check back later for our box score and recap.
