Georgetown vs. American: 12/29/2007
Team | 1 | 2 | T |
American | 28 | 23 | 51 |
Georgetown (#8) | 38 | 40 | 78 |
Johnny here at the Verizon Center, and we’re about an hour from tip-off. This game looks like it’ll be a good test for the Hoyas, as this American team is no joke, having beaten Maryland earlier this year. The Hoyas are coming off a tough loss at Memphis and will want to get back on a winning streak before the Big East season begins. We’ll have to see how many students come out since they are still on Christmas vacation, and they aren’t allowed back on campus for over a week.
Here are your starting lineups:
For the Hoyas, it’s your usual 5: Wallace, Summers, Sapp, Ewing, and Hibbert.
And for the Eagles: Mercer, Carr, Guibunda, Simon, and Rockville native Travis Lay out of Bullis.
The refs are going to be Bob Donato, Bill McCarthy, and Todd Williams.
Keep your thoughts coming during the game.

Let’s go Hoyas, let’s get those bad memories from Memphis out of our heads
December 29th, 2007 at 12:55 pm
So about the students… yeah, very very few of them, as to be expected. Looks like a whole bunch of those tickets were resold too. Let’s hope that the local American fans don’t take over the arena.
December 29th, 2007 at 12:56 pm
Hey, Johnny can you tell if the boys are wearing white or gray today? MASN’s coverage hasn’t started yet.
December 29th, 2007 at 12:58 pm
@Hoya Gray:
You can never tell what the team’s gonna be wearing when they’re in their full warmups because they zip up the tops way up high. And all the white on the sleeves always gets me nervous.
But Atomic Dog is playing, and they just came out with their gray shorts on, so GRAY it is.
December 29th, 2007 at 1:08 pm
Georgetown wins the tip, and Roy scores 10 seconds into the game. More aggressive?
December 29th, 2007 at 1:09 pm
Way to go DaJuan!
December 29th, 2007 at 1:10 pm
Nice block by Patrick in transition, and then DaJuan hit a two going the other way.
December 29th, 2007 at 1:12 pm
that time sumers looked like brandon Bowman with that reach dribble
December 29th, 2007 at 1:12 pm
Come on Hoyas. Step it up
December 29th, 2007 at 1:13 pm
At the 16 minute timeout, Hoyas are losing 10-6
December 29th, 2007 at 1:14 pm
Since the GU Pep Band is on vacation, looks like the Hoyas have some local substitutes — always a crowd favorite.
December 29th, 2007 at 1:14 pm
Freeman has checked in for Ewing as the Hoyas inbound on the sideline.
December 29th, 2007 at 1:15 pm
That’s the way rRoy
December 29th, 2007 at 1:16 pm
Very aggressive defense there by the Hoyas. Led to a foul on DaJuan, but it’s good to see that high pressure D
December 29th, 2007 at 1:17 pm
Nice shooting Jonathan
December 29th, 2007 at 1:18 pm
Roy’s not wearing a T-shirt today under his jersey. Pretty unusual.
December 29th, 2007 at 1:19 pm
That is strange. Maybe that’s his new “aggressive” look.
December 29th, 2007 at 1:21 pm
Eagles are shooting 5-5 from three point range and 2-7 from two’s
December 29th, 2007 at 1:21 pm
At the 12 minute timeout, the Hoyas are still losing, this time 15-19.
December 29th, 2007 at 1:24 pm
Rivers just checked in. That’s pretty late in the half for him to be making his first appearance this season.
December 29th, 2007 at 1:25 pm
Nice D Chris
December 29th, 2007 at 1:26 pm
Nice dish from Wright, leads to a lay-in from Roy to tie the score at 19. American coach Jeff Jones needs a timeout.
December 29th, 2007 at 1:26 pm
Wright’s been looking good so far today. Keep it up!
December 29th, 2007 at 1:27 pm
Foul #2 on DaJuan. This one was a close call as he thought he had gotten away with a clean steal. Regardless, Macklin and Ewing check in.
December 29th, 2007 at 1:29 pm
great ball movement
December 29th, 2007 at 1:31 pm
Refs are calling this one tight, as there have been several hand checks. There American gets called for an off the ball offensive foul under the basket.
December 29th, 2007 at 1:32 pm
yeah. that’s why I was so condused when they didnt call that hack on Ewing on their last trip down. that was ridiculous– they didn’t even give them the ball back.
December 29th, 2007 at 1:33 pm
Illegal screen on Macklin — see what I mean?
December 29th, 2007 at 1:36 pm
Chris Wright just made a beautiful length of the court pass to Macklin who couldn’t convert and just kept the possession.
December 29th, 2007 at 1:36 pm
Way to go Pat! He hasn’t hit one of those in a long time
December 29th, 2007 at 1:36 pm
Nice steal and length of the court break for a layup by Wright.
December 29th, 2007 at 1:37 pm
3 by Wallace gives the Hoyas a nine point lead, 32-23, their biggest of the game.
December 29th, 2007 at 1:39 pm
At the 4 minute timeout, Hoyas are up 32-25, and Macklin will be shooting 1-1 when we get back. Hibbert is set to check in, but I doubt he’ll get to right now.
December 29th, 2007 at 1:40 pm
That’s not true. The rebound could go out of bounds. Or he could airball one. But yeah making both is pretty unlikely
December 29th, 2007 at 1:42 pm
Sumers has got such a smooth shot.
December 29th, 2007 at 1:42 pm
Donato says block, but he’s overruled, and the charge goes against Summers - his third.
December 29th, 2007 at 1:44 pm
While the Eagles have cooled down from long range - now only shooting 6-10 after starting off 5-5 - the Hoyas have been lighting it up lately from downtown.
December 29th, 2007 at 1:45 pm
that might have been the wierdest call i’ve ever seen. it looked like patrick was settign a screen on defense, at midcourt
December 29th, 2007 at 1:45 pm
That does it for the first half, the Hoyas leading by 10, 38-28.
December 29th, 2007 at 1:57 pm
Found out at halftime that the local band is from Eastern High School. They just wrapped up “Don’t Phunk With My Heart” by the Black Eyed Peas
December 29th, 2007 at 2:02 pm
Second half starts the same as the first - quick bucket from Roy. He’s got 10
December 29th, 2007 at 2:04 pm
Wallace is playing well today, 4-5 from the field, including 3-4 from three point range. He’s leading the way for the Hoyas so far with 11
December 29th, 2007 at 2:09 pm
Nice block Jessie
December 29th, 2007 at 2:10 pm
It’s one thing for Roy to be aggressive. But it looks like the Hoyas are forcing it a little bit. That’s the second time in consecutive possessions that the Hoyas turn it over trying to feed the big man.
December 29th, 2007 at 2:11 pm
Yep. There’s definitely not the right balance with Roy so far this season. A bit too little impact from him earlier in the season, a bit too much attacking today. They’ll figure it out though.
December 29th, 2007 at 2:15 pm
Roy was working hard down low that whole possession. Had to fight to grab the ball. Fought through arms to get the bucket and the foul. Then he showed some energy celebrating after the call. Too bad he missed the free throw
December 29th, 2007 at 2:16 pm
Great work Austin!
December 29th, 2007 at 2:17 pm
And Jon, and DaJuan!
December 29th, 2007 at 2:17 pm
After a putback from Freeman, Wallace gets a steal on the next possession, and DaJuan slams it home to finish the fast break. Now American needs a timeout down by 20, 54-34
December 29th, 2007 at 2:20 pm
Great hustle, Chris!
December 29th, 2007 at 2:20 pm
Nice play by Chris Wright to save it from being backcourt. Then Hoyas save it from going out of bounds, and DaJuan gets a backdoor layup and one.
December 29th, 2007 at 2:23 pm
Something’s going wrong here at the Verizon Center as the scoreboard says the score is 0-0, but we know it’s 57-34 Hoyas. That means American has only scored 6 points this half so far
December 29th, 2007 at 2:24 pm
Nice lookaway drop pass from Sapp leads to a Summers slam. And he lands in a cameraman’s face.
December 29th, 2007 at 2:24 pm
wheels are falling off for American
December 29th, 2007 at 2:26 pm
Whole lot of steals for the Hoyas in the past few minutes - they have 8 total - and American uses another timeout, Hoyas up 63-34 with 9:28 to go.
December 29th, 2007 at 2:27 pm
Good D Jessie!
December 29th, 2007 at 2:28 pm
Summers three doesn’t fall, and he looks angry at the ball. It’s like he’s thinking, “What is your problem, pelota?” That is, if he speaks Spanish occasionally.
December 29th, 2007 at 2:35 pm
Way to stay with the play Tyler.
December 29th, 2007 at 2:36 pm
Come on, Austin- catch it and land.
December 29th, 2007 at 2:41 pm
Hoyas leading 71-45 at the 4 minute timeout.
December 29th, 2007 at 2:45 pm
Omar is checking in for Chris Wright. Wright has had a great game today, perhaps his best so far. He was perfect shooting: 4-4 from the field, including 1-1 from 3 point range, and 4-4 from the stripe.
December 29th, 2007 at 2:46 pm
Jansen is checking in now, for Freeman. Not the best game for Austin, but a fine showing.
December 29th, 2007 at 2:48 pm
It seemed like Austin was the only guy out there who didn’t find a rhythm. There was a stretch when everybody was hitting their shots, but today wasn’t the day for Freeman. Not worried though. That kid can shoot.
December 29th, 2007 at 2:48 pm
Yep, Freeman only went 1-5 from the field. Sapp didn’t shoot too well either today, but he did hit a three.
December 29th, 2007 at 2:50 pm
Jansen might not be the best player out there, but he certainly brings energy. Looks like just the kind of guy you’d want to motivate your team in practice.
December 29th, 2007 at 2:50 pm
Omar can shoot too.
December 29th, 2007 at 2:51 pm
Wattad’s three put the score at 78-51, and it looks like Omar walked back with an extra bounce in his step.
And that’s the final score 78-51 for the Hoyas.
December 29th, 2007 at 2:52 pm
Good work Hoyas. Keep it up on Monday.
December 29th, 2007 at 2:53 pm
good showing hoyas! now let’s keep up our winning attitude
December 29th, 2007 at 4:25 pm
My play of the game: Vernon Macklin driving and using a crossover dribble before making a reverse layup. Not an impact play bu good to see Mack showing some good stuff
