The Georgetown Hoyas defeated the American University Eagles 78-51 on Saturday at the Verizon Center. Both teams entered the game after seven days off; Georgetown was coming off their first defeat of the season to Memphis, while American upset the University of Maryland in their previous outing.
For the opening minutes of this game, the Eagles looked poised for another local upset. American guards Derrick Mercer and Garrison Carr combined to start 5-5 from 3-point range and helped the Eagles establish a 6-point lead. The Hoyas responded by toughening their defense and closed the half on a 25-9 run to take a 10-point lead at the half. Georgetown shot 15 for 21 (71.4%) from the field in the first half.
Georgetown pulled away in the second half as their lead was never cut to single digits. DaJuan Summers scored a team-high 16 points for the Hoyas, with Roy Hibbert adding 14 points (6-9 FG). Ten different players scored for Georgetown, and the Hoya bench outscored American’s 30-7. American’s Mercer led all scorers with 17 points.
Georgetown’s record now stands at 9-1 and they will be back in action on Monday at 2:00 pm when they host the Fordham Rams.
