With Jeff Green playing his first game with the SuperSonics tonight, the 2007-2008 Hoyas have a lot of personnel questions to address: Who will be the fifth starter? Who will provide the missing 14 points per game? Who will take the last second shot? But, to me, the most interesting question is, Who will jump for the opening tip?

The NBA season begins today. As a Knicks fans during the Ewing era, I fondly remember the NBA seasons of the mid 1990’s. That was the time when Hoyas dominated the league from sea to shining sea. There were some days during that period when the NBA Hoyas’ total points scored would outscore entire NBA teams. Patrick Ewing, David Wingate, Reggie Williams, Jaren Jackson, Dikembe Mutombo, Alonzo Mourning, Don Reid, Othella Harrington, Jerome Williams, and Allen Iverson all played in the league in the 1996-97 season. That’s ten players from Georgetown, which was the perfect number to “Create a Team” on EA Sports’ NBA Live ‘97. Ten years later, there are only five Hoyas on NBA rosters to start opening day, but it could be the beginning of the new wave.

Big East Media Day occurred a few days ago, and the events that transpired should come as no surprise to most people: Hibbert was chosen as Big East preseason player of the year; Georgetown was picked to finish first in the conference. But, there is one more thing that will not surprise people this year. And that is the Georgetown Hoyas.

- Roy Hibbert and Jonathan Wallace, already named to the Preseason All Big East First Team, were selected as two of the 50 preseason candidates for the Wooden Award. Georgetown is only one of five teams to have two players selected, along with UCLA, North Carolina, Kansas, and Washington State.
- The Charlotte Bobcats waived Jameel Watkins to reach their 15 player roster limit. While the final rosters are not officially set until 6:00PM, it looks as if Othella Harrington will remain with the Bobcats to start the season.
- Georgetown was ranked #5 in the first ESPN/USA Today Coaches’ Poll of the 2007-2008 season. UNC was ranked #1.

Alright, for the first edition of Hoya Hoops’ Game Time, we’ll be writing Hoykus, poetry about the beauty of Georgetown Basketball. But before we get to explaining the rules, here is an excerpt from the classic television show Cheers:
Sam: Oh, come on Diane, writing poetry is easy. All it has to do is rhyme.
Diane: Sam, it doesn’t have to rhyme.
Sam: Even easier!
With that in mind, it’s time for you to put on your Japanese poetry thinking caps. Remember, it’s not a Haiku (or HOY-ku in our case) unless the first line has five syllables, the second line has seven syllables, and the third and final line has five syllables. Got it? 5-7-5. Here’s ours:
The longer he stays
The more likely we succeed
Long Live Jim Boeheim
Think you can do better? Post your own Hoykus in the comments.

Happy Birthday Mike Sweetney!
We’ve already talked about the current situation in which Big Mike finds himself and about his impressive numbers as a Hoya. Let’s hope his birthday cake comes with a new NBA contract…Make a Wish, Big Fella!

Yesterday was Big East Media Day. The Big East coaches all voted for who they thought were the best players and teams going into the season, and the results are in. The Hoyas were picked to finish first (actually they ended up being co-favorites with Louisville as they received the same number of votes). Roy Hibbert was selected as the Big East Preseason Player of the Year. Hibbert and Jonathan Wallace were both named to the Preseason All Big East First Team. It’s often very rewarding to be recognized by one’s peers, but it’s a trap.

On Sunday, Hoya Hoop Club members were invited to McDonough to see the 2008 Hoyas during an open practice. Open practices are a great opportunity for fans to get a glimpse of what goes on behind the scenes of their favorite teams, and they can also get a sneak peek of the team’s new players who’ve yet to play a game in their team’s colors.

As sports fans, we rely a lot on statistics. We talk about free-throw percentage, three-point percentage, field goal percentage. We look at series history, records, and winning streaks. We live by statistics. I, myself, am a mathematician, so I know better than most the importance of numbers. Numbers are our friends. But, sometimes, they can be fair-weather friends.

We at Hoya Hoops are happy to be introducing three new sections to our site.
- The first, Numbers Up, will be written by Mike, our resident mathematician, where he will look at Georgetown Basketball from a mathematical point of view, analyzing trends from game stats and trying to glean some insight into potential weaknesses or strengths of the Hoyas.
- Johnny will be providing Hoya Hoops with some levity in his new section, Eyeball to Eyeball, which will focus on the lighter side of Georgetown Basketball, reminding us all that it is still just a game.
- And finally, we are proud to introduce Game Time (based on the section of the same name on our sibling site Shlake.com), a place where you the readers will get to have some fun in the comments, playing Georgetown related games.
We hope you enjoy these new additions to our site, and as always, we welcome your feedback in the comments or at .
