Time to Transfer Our Attention

By Tony

Now that the college basketball season is officially over and everybody is looking forward to next season, it’s time to address a potential problem of summer vacation. Fortunately this isn’t a problem that has hurt the Hoyas very recently, but over the past decade or so it has been something that Georgetown has had serious trouble dealing with - transfers.

Happy New Year!

By Tony

The 2008 season is over. Happy New Year! Now everybody can start planning for the 2008-09 season. For the Hoyas, there will be a lot of changes from ‘08. It will be very strange not hearing “Jonathan Wallace” announced in the Georgetown starting line-up and not seeing Big Roy demanding the ball in the post, but such is life in college basketball.

2008 NCAA Championship Recap

By Hoya Hoops

20 years after Danny Manning led the Kansas Jayhawks to a National Championship, the Jayhawks are once again the best college basketball team in the land. Kansas defeated Memphis 75-68 in overtime to win the 2008 NCAA Men’s Basketball National Championship. Memphis had one foot in the winner’s circle as they used a 20-8 run late in regulation to extend to their largest lead of nine with 2:12 remaining. But Kansas Head Coach Bill Self decided to force the Tigers to win the game at the free throw line. Memphis had struggled shooting free throws all season long, and the championship game was no exception. Their failure to make foul shots with the season on the line left the door open for the Jayhawks. Mario Chalmers completed the exciting comeback with a contested three-pointer that tied the score with 2.1 seconds to play in regulation. The half-court shot from Memphis at the buzzer bounced off the upper part of the backboard.

10th Year’s a Charm

By Hoya Hoops

All year long, Washington, DC has been celebrating the tenth anniversary of the Verizon Center. The state-of-the-art arena has rejuvenated Chinatown and has quickly become a DC landmark. Unfortunately, the resident teams have not faired so well over the past ten years. We already talked about Georgetown’s past ten seasons in their new home, and quite similarly, the Wizards and Capitals have also had some pretty rough years in that span. Also like the Hoyas, though, the two teams have had a recent resurgence and both are poised to make the playoffs for the first time in Verizon Center history.

Green’s Big Night

By Johnny

Allen Iverson and the Denver Nuggets need to win all the games they can in order to make the NBA playoffs. They’re in a battle with the Golden State Warriors for the eighth and final playoff spot in the Western conference, and time is running out. Heading into their game against the Seattle SuperSonics last night, they had beaten the Sonics in all three meetings, the last of which being the 168-116 blowout less than a month ago. This time, however, Jeff Green didn’t want to go down without a fight.

Happy Green Guy or Scary Priest?

By Johnny

George Mason’s Jim Larranaga made headlines on Wednesday by turning down an offer to become the head coach of the Providence Friars. He had the opportunity to coach at his alma mater in one of the nation’s best conferences where he would most certainly get more media attention, better recruits, and most likely a nice pay raise, but to me, his refusal of the offer was no surprise. Why? George Mason is more fun.

Mascot Matchups

By Hoya Hoops

The NCAA Final Four officially begins tomorrow night, but the festivities have already begun. In keeping with the laid back attitude of last night’s Dunk Contest, we started thinking about a slightly sillier competition that could precede the semifinal matchups - pit the mascots against each other. We wonder who would win in real life combat: a Jayhawk or a Ram? A Tiger or a Bear? So here’s our question:

Which teams’ mascots would make for the most interesting battle?

We would probably be most interested in seeing Michigan vs. Cincinnati. Wolverines are definitely savage, and we’d like to see what exactly a Bearcat is.

What about you? Post your answers in the comments.

The Perfect Performance

By Johnny

Last night, Patrick Ewing, Jr. performed in the National Association of Basketball Coaches (NABC) 20th Annual State Farm Slam Dunk Contest, and he did just about as good as anyone could ask. He didn’t rival Vince Carter, or Michael and Dominique, but he had a perfect outing.
