Me, Myself, and I
By TonyAs a fan, I have a sort of split personality. It’s not exactly a mental disorder; it’s more like the little angel and devil you see on people’s shoulders in cartoons. The little devil always gets furious when the Hoyas teams lose and thinks that the sun will never come up again. The little angel always remains positive (naturally) and finds plenty of reasons why the team will turn it around in the next game. I have to try and take the valid points from both of them to come up with the most reasonable position. Since Georgetown doesn’t play for one whole week, we have plenty of time to reflect on everything and come up with the best way to handle the team’s struggle. Today, you’ll hear from the little devil guy, tomorrow the angel of hope will give his thoughts, and later this week I’ll be back to try to give an accurate analysis of what the Hoyas can do without being too cranky or too rosy.
But first, here’s what the devil has to say. We were going to vote on who should speak first, but he just rudely decided to take his turn first - go figure. Before I let him have the floor though, please keep in mind that all three of us have maximum respect for all of the players and coaches. Any criticism or critique will never be emotionally driven. Everything will be based on the facts of the past games, and we feel like nothing we say would be disputed by the individuals themselves. OK, take it away Angel of Darkness.
Remember Back to the Future? Near the end of that movie, it looked like Marty McFly wasn’t going to save his parents. He had a picture from the future, and the people in the picture had started to fade away in the photo. When the people disappeared, it meant that Marty and his brother and sister would never be born and eventually he would disappear entirely. Remember? Well if not, put the movie into your Netflix queue. If you do remember, consider this.Early in the season I got a team poster of the Hoyas and hung it on my wall. When I looked at it after the home loss to Cincinnati, I noticed that Austin Freeman had nearly vanished!
That guy is a stud, but without him scoring or contributing offensively, the Hoyas have no chance to make the NCAA’s - no chance. He needs to score. Period. The same is true for Chris Wright and Greg Monroe, but at least those two guys are really fighting. Wright is taking to the basket hard; Monroe is doing his best in the perpetually jam-packed low post. Those two guys need to do better, but at least you can see them trying. I’m sure Freeman is trying, but when you go twenty minutes in a close game without a bucket you need to try a little harder.
It looks as though there is only one thing that can help the Hoyas now, and interestingly enough it’s the same thing that helped in Back to the Future. No, not to go back in time and change the past, although that would help, too. Somebody for the Hoyas needs to harness the power of lightning! That’s all. Maybe Nikita Meshariakov will hit 10 three-pointers at the Carrier Dome, maybe Monroe will mess around and get a triple-double, maybe Freeman will score 40 points. Whatever it is, if the magic moment doesn’t happen against Syracuse, then there is only one person who can help the Hoyas - this guy!
