If you’re like me, you used to like the NBA, but now you don’t. That was back in the days when teams tried to build success around drafted players instead of relying solely upon free agency. Well, now that the Celtics have become world champions thanks to free agency, it’s another tough blow for old-time NBA fans. So, if you’re like me it’s time to move into what ever century this is, and accept the fact that it’s a new day.

Yesterday was a big day for college basketball fans. June 17th was the deadline for college students to withdraw their name from the NBA draft and still retain their eligibility. For Hoya fans, there was little drama, as they could watch the last minute decisions with relative ease. Of course, there was some excitement, but the relief of Joe Alexander’s departure to the NBA or the return of a powerful UNC lineup probably did not cause Georgetown fans to lose any sleep. It was a different story last year.

Last week, the 2008 NBA Lottery took place, and for the fifth time in as many years, the worst team in the NBA did not get the number one draft pick. As odd as it sounds, it is by design. To me, that means there is a problem.

Congratulations to Jeff Green on being named to the NBA Rookie First Team. I still think that Jeff would’ve been better off playing at Georgetown this past season, but that ship has sailed. Anyway, according to the most knowledgeable people in the league, Jeff was one of the Top 5 first year players. That’s great for him, and even better for Georgetown University - maybe.

• After averaging 10.5 points and 4.7 rebounds a game, Jeff Green was named to the NBA All-Rookie First Team. Jeff is the first Hoya to make the team since Allen Iverson in 1996-97.
• This past weekend, former Georgetown Captain Tom Scates passed away from a heart attack. Graduating in 1979, Scates was one of Coach John Thompson Jr.’s first big men, and he graduated as the best shot blocker in team history. • According to Fox Sports, Vernon Macklin has decided where he wants to transfer to: the University of Florida. He will have to sit out next year and then will have two years of eligibility for the Gators.
• The Utah Jazz defeated the Houston Rockets 113-91 on Friday, sending Dikembe Mutombo home for the summer. Dikembe was the last Hoya still in the NBA playoffs after the Lakers sent Allen Iverson and the Nuggets packing last week.

The Phoenix Suns defeated the Golden State Warriors 122-116 Monday night, which means that the Denver Nuggets secure a playoff berth in the West. It takes the pressure off of Denver, who are still mathematically alive for a seventh seed. They say that when you are playing well, things go your way, and the Nuggets are starting to click at the exact right time. And perhaps no one in the NBA is playing as well as Allen Iverson.

Allen Iverson and the Denver Nuggets need to win all the games they can in order to make the NBA playoffs. They’re in a battle with the Golden State Warriors for the eighth and final playoff spot in the Western conference, and time is running out. Heading into their game against the Seattle SuperSonics last night, they had beaten the Sonics in all three meetings, the last of which being the 168-116 blowout less than a month ago. This time, however, Jeff Green didn’t want to go down without a fight.
