Recently we’ve taken a look at some great seniors of Georgetown History who have made incredible impacts as the lone seniors. Now, we’ll take a look at what this season could mean for Jessie Sapp. We at Hoya Hoops have the utmost respect for all the Hoya players past and present, and that includes Bryon Jansen. But if Bryon makes significant contributions on the court for the Hoyas, it won’t be good for the team since it means that other players have gotten injured. For the purposes of our analysis here, we mean Sapp doesn’t have any seniors to help him on the floor, we in no way trivialize Jansen’s importance to the team.
We’ve talked about the senior seasons of Reggie Williams and Kevin Braswell. This season, Jessie Sapp has an opportunity to join that elite company with regard to showing leadership as the team’s only senior. His numbers will pale in comparison to Kevin Braswell’s, and his overall greatness will not be at the same level as Reggie Williams, but Jessie can still leave a lasting legacy on Georgetown Basketball.

I’ve been talking about senior leaders lately, and another player who was alone in his leadership role - like Reggie Williams before him and soon to be Jessie Sapp after him - was Kevin Braswell.
Kevin Braswell was the last class that came to Georgetown to play for John Thompson. Braswell had barely started his freshman season when Coach Thompson resigned in January of 1999. His career was in some ways overshadowed by the team’s struggles during his time as a Hoya, but Braswell remains one of the all-time Hoya greats. Because of the circumstances when he played for Georgetown, he didn’t have the luxury of learning to be a point guard from other older great point guard teammates. Braswell was forced to learn on the job. But even with the important role he played throughout his career from day one, his senior season was far and away his best.

“I played with Alonzo and Dikembe, but I never saw anybody do the things that Reggie did.” - Mark Tillmon (GU Class of 1990)
Last week, I talked about Jessie Sapp being the only senior leader on the current Georgetown roster. Twenty-two years ago, one of the greatest Hoyas of all time was in a similar position.

There is no denying the void that has been left by the departed senior class of 2008. It will feel very strange for all Hoya fans to hear the starting line-ups announced on November 19 at Verizon Center and not hear Jonathan Wallace’s name. But this is the reality of college basketball, and while it is sad and difficult at times to move on, there is also a great opportunity for new players to accept the responsibility of making up for what the departed players left behind.

Last night, Georgetown honored the 2007-08 Men’s Basketball Team at the Hoya Hoop Club Basketball Banquet. We know that a lot of you were unable to make it, so we had decided to send a Hoya Hoops representative to the Leavey Center to provide some details to those who missed out. I was that representative, and while I am not going to give you a full recount of what took place, I’ll do my best to talk about the highlights.

The Final Four is upon us once again. Personally, it seems like much longer than just one year ago that the Hoyas were preparing to take on Ohio State in the 2007 Final Four. A lot has changed in that one year, both nationally and on the hilltop. Throughout this season in college basketball, I felt like there were three teams that were the top teams in the country - Memphis, Kansas, and UCLA. There were a handful of teams that were just slightly below that upper echelon - North Carolina, Tennessee, Texas, Georgetown, and Louisville among a few others. I felt that even as a #2 seed in the NCAA Tournament, the Hoyas would have had to have a lot of things go their way to win the National Championship. As it was, very little did go their way.

In the fall of 1986, four freshmen basketball players began their careers at Georgetown University. That was an important time in Georgetown Basketball history. The previous March, four long-time Hoyas had ended their historic careers: Ralph Dalton, David Wingate, Michael Jackson, and Horace Broadnax had all been major contributors on the NCAA National Championship team two years earlier. Two of those players left school among the all-time greats - Wingate ended his career as the third all-time leading scorer, and Jackson was Georgetown’s all-time leader in assists after his four seasons. There was a cloud of doubt at the start of the 1986-87 season, and in many ways the future of Georgetown Basketball depended on those four freshmen.

Sunday morning, as I was packing my bags and preparing to check out of my hotel room just outside of Raleigh, North Carolina, I was planning out my upcoming week with my fiancee, Emily. “If we win today, then the next round is on Friday and Sunday in Detroit,” I was saying. “I’d have to miss work on Friday and then we’d have to see about flights for Sunday night or Monday.” Since Emily is a teacher at a Catholic elementary school, she had the week off for Easter and said, “Well if it works out, I’ll be able to come since I don’t have school until the following Tuesday.” I would still have to worry about making up the hours at work and about finding a hotel, a flight, and some means of transport to get to the games. But that was all still very far away.

With Senior Day tomorrow, we’ve been talking a lot about Georgetown’s four seniors this past week, both about their value to the team and about some of their most memorable moments. But now it’s time for us to dig a little deeper in the minds of the senior class. What do we really know about them? What makes them tick? And most importantly, what’s their favorite pizza topping?
