Hey everybody, Johnny here at Verizon Center. We’re still about half an hour from the opening tip, but there are already more students here than there were at the USF game. Coming off that tough loss against Louisville, the Hoyas are looking to set things straight against a struggling Villanova team. History is not on the Hoyas’ side though as Georgetown has yet to defeat the Wildcats at their home in Chinatown.
I’ll be keeping you updated for the next few hours, so be sure to check back often and keep your thoughts coming in the comments.
February 11th, 2008 at 6:31 pm
So here’s what I got in terms of starting lineups:
For the Hoyas, it’s your usual 5 - Wallace, Summers, Freeman, Sapp, and Hibbert.
For the Wildcats, you’re going to see Reynolds, Drummond, Fisher, Anderson, and Cunningham.
And the refs today are John Cahill, Bob Donato, and Karl Hess.
February 11th, 2008 at 6:38 pm
Need a big bounce back win tonight. Would be nice if Wallace could get back on track with the three-balls. And if Rivers could not pass it to the other team every time he gets the ball.
February 11th, 2008 at 6:39 pm
It would be nice to finally beat these guys at home. Not that it would make up for the Louisville loss, but I’ll feel better for the rest of the week.
February 11th, 2008 at 6:46 pm
Aaron Broadus and company have just started playing “Kung Fu Fighting.” Let’s see if the Boys in Gray can fight with expert timing against the Wildcats.
February 11th, 2008 at 6:47 pm
And Jack the Bulldog is holding up a sign that reads:
JESUITS ARE COOLER
February 11th, 2008 at 6:50 pm
Come on Hoyas let’s get back in that win column!
February 11th, 2008 at 6:57 pm
jesuits are cooler..but whos gonna win this game I hjope the Hoyas
February 11th, 2008 at 6:58 pm
There are a fair number of Villanova fans here at the Phone Booth. And you could hear them chanting “Let’s Go Nova” as the Georgetown fans were awaiting the Chimes to start singing the National Anthem.
February 11th, 2008 at 7:00 pm
Instead of the standard Zombie Nation the Verizon Center crew has been playing before the opening tip, tonight they’re going with “Welcome to the Jungle.”
February 11th, 2008 at 7:00 pm
shanananananananneeeneeeee
February 11th, 2008 at 7:02 pm
Hibbert wins the opening tip and big Roy gets a dunk on the first possession.
February 11th, 2008 at 7:02 pm
Full court pressure by the Wildcats, and they call a travel on Sapp. Interesting call.
February 11th, 2008 at 7:03 pm
I thouhgt he had that one.
February 11th, 2008 at 7:05 pm
jwal looked hesitant there- just keep shooting little buddy
February 11th, 2008 at 7:06 pm
THERE YOU GO!
February 11th, 2008 at 7:06 pm
Three from Wallace gets everybody here excited. And a three from Jessie means Jay Wright needs a timeout.
February 11th, 2008 at 7:07 pm
Any question Jessie was gonna nail that one?
February 11th, 2008 at 7:09 pm
After that miss and foul by the Wildcats, it’s now the official timeout, still 10-2 for the Hoyas. So far, Nova is only 1-8 from the field.
February 11th, 2008 at 7:11 pm
Another early lead - let’s put em away like we did to st. johns
February 11th, 2008 at 7:12 pm
Great block by DaJuan, great hustle by Freeman, and great work by Sapp to get a bucket.
February 11th, 2008 at 7:13 pm
jay bilas loves sapp
February 11th, 2008 at 7:15 pm
@Buckmonkey,
Has he said that he’s the glue to this team yet?
February 11th, 2008 at 7:15 pm
I like how the Nova guy flopped after hammering Roy
February 11th, 2008 at 7:15 pm
Sapp’s coming out a little gimpy, and he’s getting some treatment on the bench.
February 11th, 2008 at 7:16 pm
Nice ball movement that time. I like midrange jumpers
February 11th, 2008 at 7:17 pm
That’s Scottie Reynold’s third consecutive three-pointer. And it’s now 15-12 Hoyas.
February 11th, 2008 at 7:18 pm
sapp is not looking good - i think he’s about to puke into that shirt
February 11th, 2008 at 7:18 pm
No foul there as Ewing drove the lane. Just the ball under the basket with 1 second on the shot clock when we get back from the 12 minute timeout.
February 11th, 2008 at 7:20 pm
And the Hoyas get a shotclock violation.
February 11th, 2008 at 7:21 pm
I like the defense there, as the Hoyas pick up 2 blocks.
February 11th, 2008 at 7:22 pm
rivers with the unnecessary spin, again
February 11th, 2008 at 7:22 pm
Roy’s getting his first bit of rest as Macklin takes the court.
February 11th, 2008 at 7:23 pm
looked clean to me
February 11th, 2008 at 7:24 pm
what???
February 11th, 2008 at 7:25 pm
terrible call
February 11th, 2008 at 7:25 pm
Horrible call there as Reynolds is all over a still Wallace, and then he flops as Jon tries to get some room. Wallace spiked the ball after the call - you know something’s up there.
February 11th, 2008 at 7:25 pm
That’s #2 on Rivers. Looks like Reynolds is getting the home treatment from the officials.
February 11th, 2008 at 7:27 pm
Take care of that ball!
February 11th, 2008 at 7:28 pm
The Hoyas are struggling from beyond the arc and at breaking the press. Nova’s got their biggest lead 19-15 as we head into the 8:00 timeout.
February 11th, 2008 at 7:31 pm
I think the Hoyas would rather let them play with Roy in the post. It’s the fouls when they’re pressing that need to be called.
February 11th, 2008 at 7:32 pm
huh?
February 11th, 2008 at 7:33 pm
tough call there
February 11th, 2008 at 7:33 pm
Another absurd call. I don’t even understand that one. Roy is standing there. They don’t fall down. Offensive off the ball foul on Hibbert.
February 11th, 2008 at 7:33 pm
getting sloppy on both sides . . .
February 11th, 2008 at 7:35 pm
hip check
February 11th, 2008 at 7:36 pm
That’s the first trip to the line where the Hoyas made them both.
February 11th, 2008 at 7:36 pm
Speaking of sloppy…
February 11th, 2008 at 7:37 pm
woulda been a nice one for bambam
February 11th, 2008 at 7:37 pm
no
February 11th, 2008 at 7:38 pm
no travel theere
February 11th, 2008 at 7:39 pm
Coach was calling for a timeout there. Instead, there’s an ill-advised three by the Hoyas. Luckily there’s a foul on the rebound. Hoyas down five at the 4:00 timeout.
February 11th, 2008 at 7:41 pm
obligatory villanova ad during the commercial break. more like villa no fun. why is crawford getting so many minutes of late? is jt3 trying to shake things up?
February 11th, 2008 at 7:42 pm
gotta get a little hot before the half here
February 11th, 2008 at 7:42 pm
Someone needs to remind the officiating crew that this is the Big East. Too many offensive fouls this half.
February 11th, 2008 at 7:43 pm
what?? dajuan was murdered out there
February 11th, 2008 at 7:43 pm
Is it too much to ask that JTIII try pushing the ball up court instead of walking the ball up?
February 11th, 2008 at 7:44 pm
ill take that off. foul
February 11th, 2008 at 7:44 pm
Big three by DaJuan ties the game with 2:00 left in the half.
February 11th, 2008 at 7:44 pm
splash
February 11th, 2008 at 7:46 pm
Way to stay with it Vernon!
February 11th, 2008 at 7:48 pm
Second time that coach has been calling a timeout and the refs don’t notice. Patrick had to grab one of them to let him know we wanted to set up a play.
February 11th, 2008 at 7:50 pm
Another hand check. It’s not lopsided; it’s just poor officiating. Why are they calling all these touch fouls? Looks like they want to show everyone who’s the boss.
February 11th, 2008 at 7:51 pm
Is that our press? No wonder we don’t use it too often. Yuck.
February 11th, 2008 at 7:53 pm
Lots of free throws to end the half, and Hoyas trail by one at the break, 28-29. Hoyas need to improve their long range shooting, but it seems they’ve been getting better at the press break and their freethrow woes that plagued them at the start of the half.
February 11th, 2008 at 8:03 pm
break scottie reynolds’ knee cap, game over.
February 11th, 2008 at 8:07 pm
Hi everyone, Mike here in section 120. Just a few thoughts. First, the Hoyas need to find Roy. Also, don’t settle for the threeball. Oh, and make the free throws. Hoyas would be ahead if not for that. Hoya Saxa!
February 11th, 2008 at 8:07 pm
And here’s Zombie Nation to start the second half.
February 11th, 2008 at 8:10 pm
Can this get any sloppier?
February 11th, 2008 at 8:10 pm
What a way to start the half.
February 11th, 2008 at 8:11 pm
That’s Roy’s third personal.
February 11th, 2008 at 8:13 pm
Touch fouls in the first, touch fouls in the second.
February 11th, 2008 at 8:15 pm
they dont seem to have any confidence right now. where is the leadership going to come from? wallace is struggling too much to assert himself. hibby? sapp?
February 11th, 2008 at 8:15 pm
Three minutes and forty-five seconds into the half, the Hoyas get their first points from the line. Still no field goals yet.
February 11th, 2008 at 8:18 pm
I don’t know Luke. Maybe Patrick Ewing’s energy can lead the Hoyas. Or DaJuan? With Hibbert already having 3 fouls, I can’t see him being too assertive out there either.
February 11th, 2008 at 8:20 pm
You can see it in his face when the shot misses, and you can hear it from the fans: everyone is desperate for Wallace to re-find his shot.
February 11th, 2008 at 8:22 pm
Looks like Assistant Matt Henry earned the Hoyas a fresh shotclock on that one, convincing the refs Georgetown had lost possession.
February 11th, 2008 at 8:22 pm
thats it DAJUAN
February 11th, 2008 at 8:23 pm
Summers’ three gives the Hoyas their first lead of the half, and a Ewing drawn charge gives the Hoyas the ball back.
February 11th, 2008 at 8:23 pm
paint points!
February 11th, 2008 at 8:23 pm
Triple teamed, calm, cool, and collected. NBA move by the big man.
February 11th, 2008 at 8:24 pm
I don’t understand. Travelling? Maybe out of bounds, but travelling?
February 11th, 2008 at 8:25 pm
bailout call
February 11th, 2008 at 8:27 pm
Roy’s upset with himself for missing that one. Hopefully he won’t let it get to him, and he’ll at least make up two of those points.
February 11th, 2008 at 8:29 pm
Great work defensively Hoyas. Keep it up!
February 11th, 2008 at 8:30 pm
Father McFadden just announced that the Hoyas’ next game is on Saturday when the Hoyas head to Freedom Hall to take on the University of Louisville. Whoops. Someone forgot to update the reads for him.
February 11th, 2008 at 8:31 pm
gotta hit the freethrows. gonna be big now
February 11th, 2008 at 8:32 pm
Roy missed the front end of a one and one. Now it’s Jeremiah’s turn at the line. There are going to be a lot of freethrows in this one, and it could decide the game.
February 11th, 2008 at 8:33 pm
PATRICK!
February 11th, 2008 at 8:33 pm
Ewing’s three makes it 41-33. Biggest lead for the Hoyas since 12-4. And the crowd goes wild as Jay Wright uses a timeout.
February 11th, 2008 at 8:35 pm
I will be happy if we can get out of this one with a W. Hoyas not playing great ball, despite the lead.
February 11th, 2008 at 8:36 pm
Paul, that’s the story of the season. I can’t wait til we start playing well
February 11th, 2008 at 8:37 pm
That’s Jeremiah’s fourth foul. He was playing aggressive defense, but he didn’t put his hands on him.
February 11th, 2008 at 8:37 pm
time to close this out; lock em up on d and feed the big fella all the way to the buzzer.
February 11th, 2008 at 8:39 pm
great cut JWAL
February 11th, 2008 at 8:39 pm
Foul #7 on the Hoyas. Both teams shooting throughout. And there’s still 9:00 left.
February 11th, 2008 at 8:40 pm
THATS MY BOY!!!11!
February 11th, 2008 at 8:41 pm
Wallace hits a three-pointer, and Nova needs another timeout down 46-34 with 8:38 to go.
February 11th, 2008 at 8:42 pm
Foul trouble might be an issue as both big men for the Hoyas have 3 and Rivers has 4. There is still a lot of basketball to be played.
February 11th, 2008 at 8:43 pm
That’s Villanova’s first field goal since that dunk to start the half. Wow.
February 11th, 2008 at 8:44 pm
wow. Great defense hoyas. or poor shooting nova. either way, let’s keep em not scoring for 7 more minutes
February 11th, 2008 at 8:47 pm
Roy’s heading back to the scorer’s table.
February 11th, 2008 at 8:50 pm
Sloppy play Hoyas. Keep it together. Don’t let them back in it.
February 11th, 2008 at 9:04 pm
WALLACE!!!
February 11th, 2008 at 9:05 pm
Sorry about that. Technical difficulties. Wow. Right when the Hoyas need it, Wallace steps up and hits a crucial three pointer to put the Hoyas up four. Slump or no slump, Wallace is still a vital part of this team.
February 11th, 2008 at 9:05 pm
That is not a foul.
February 11th, 2008 at 9:06 pm
protect the rock!
February 11th, 2008 at 9:06 pm
Tie game with 1:00 left and the Hoyas have the ball.
February 11th, 2008 at 9:07 pm
reynolds is sick.
February 11th, 2008 at 9:07 pm
Third time today Coach has had a hard time calling a timeout. He got it in time this time
February 11th, 2008 at 9:09 pm
Fourteen FG attempts in a half is too few. I know the Hoyas are deliberate, but they need to have the option to pick up the pace.
February 11th, 2008 at 9:09 pm
Freeman’s three-pointer is off the mark. 53-53 with 30.1 to go and Villanova calls a timeout.
February 11th, 2008 at 9:10 pm
32 FG attempts for the Wildcats. They’ve only hit four of them. 7/14 > 4/32
February 11th, 2008 at 9:12 pm
fouled!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!
February 11th, 2008 at 9:12 pm
Jeremiah Rivers comes up with a block on Reynolds, and after the scramble for the rebound there’s a foul on Villanova sending Jonathan Wallace to the line with 0.1 seconds to go.
February 11th, 2008 at 9:13 pm
I’m a life long Hoya fan, but that’s a terrible call.
February 11th, 2008 at 9:13 pm
Wallace hits the first.
February 11th, 2008 at 9:14 pm
JWAL!!!!!!!!!!!
February 11th, 2008 at 9:15 pm
Everyone talks about Sapp’s crunchtime performances, but what about Jeremiah Rivers. Shuts down Syracuse singlehandedly and comes up with a critical, critical block tonight. WOW.
February 11th, 2008 at 9:15 pm
a win is a win, i guess.
February 11th, 2008 at 9:15 pm
Reynolds committed about 3 offensive fouls on his last drive so I call that karmic payback on the blocking foul. Besides, it was clear that the Nova guy was trying to bump Wallace out of bounds. I don’t think you can swallow your whistle on that.
February 11th, 2008 at 9:37 pm
We need to work on the press break. It’s ridiculous that against a team that presses for almost the entire game we didn’t get one run-out basket. The two man back and forth in the backcourt gets the ball over the line, but then nobody is in a position to make them pay.
February 11th, 2008 at 9:47 pm
From the press conference:
What do you think when the game is decided by the referees?
JTIII: Glad it went our way.
Big John: Thank you Jesus.
