Johnny’s Post-Tournament Thoughts

By Johnny

I think enough has probably been said about the Old Spice Classic in terms of real basketball-related stuff, so I’m just gonna mention some fun things I noticed from my trip.

Teams

Georgetown:
After losing to Tennessee, the Hoyas become 3-1 on the season in their home gray uniforms.

Then, on Sunday, they earned win #1 in their road blue. It was the first time the team showed off their new unis and I think they looked pretty nice. They were definitely better than these.

Mike’s Post-Tournament Thoughts

By Mike

Teams

Georgetown:
The Hoyas grew a lot over the course of this tournament. In the Wichita State game, the team looked a little flat, perhaps they felt a little like Allen Iverson, upset about having to work on Thanksgiving. The team did well closing out that game though, and showed character by not getting anxious despite the closeness of the game.

Georgetown came out ready to play against Tennessee, and for more than 3/4 of the game held their own. Unfortunately, the offense stalled near the end of the game, and their defense did not bail them out when they needed stops. Poor rebounding also hurt the Hoyas, and the Volunteers punished them for it, cutting an eight point Georgetown lead down to two on one possession via offensive boards.

But, the Hoyas had no trouble bouncing back against a mediocre Maryland side, leaving no doubt which is the premiere team in the DC area. The Hoyas ran the offense to perfection against the Terps’ man-to-man defense, and the game was over by halftime. Georgetown also did well not to turn the ball over too much against Maryland’s full-court pressure, a problem that often plagues the Hoyas. And, although it does not mean all problems have been resolved, the Hoyas did outrebound the Terps 39-26.

Wichita State In-Game Thread

By Johnny

Hello! I’ve made it down to Florida, I’m sitting on the floor of The Milk House in the Wide World of Sports Complex in Walt Disney World, and I’m watching the end of the opening game of the Old Spice Classic between Tennessee and Siena. Right now there’s 10 minutes to go and the Volunteers are winning by 17. The Hoyas will begin their game half an hour after the finish of this game, so the 2:00 start time was a little off, but hopefully that means you all can finish your turkey and digest in front of the tube.

I’ll give you the lineups as soon as I get them and I’ll be posting updates and comments throughout the game. Feel free to leave your own thoughts and comments below. (You know the drill.)

Greg against Garrett

By Hoya Hoops

Before the Drexel game, we asked everybody how they thought Austin Freeman would perform offensively. Turns out pretty well, as he went 6-7 from the field including 2-3 from three-point land, and he ended up with 16 points. Zo nailed it by guessing 16 points, even though Austin actually shot better than Zo had predicted. And on a game where Alonzo Mourning was there signing his book and answering the Jiffy Lube Trivia Question, we think it’s appropriate a commenter named Zo wins the prediction.

Now for this week’s question. Tony talked about Greg Monroe yesterday, the media’s been singing his praises, and the fans are pretty excited about him too. Tomorrow, Greg will be facing taller opposition for the first time in his Georgetown career as he is set to face off against Wichita State’s freshman center Garrett Stutz. Stutz had a big game against Centenary on Monday leading all scorers with 22 points off of 10-13 from the field. With that in mind, here’s our question:

How many points will Greg Monroe score against Wichita State and how well will he shoot?

We’re going to say Greg will put up 16 points off of 6-10 from the field. Tell us what you think and work on catching up to Hoya Gray and Zo in the Hoya Hoops T-shirt race.
