In The Godfather, when Tom Hagan is having dinner with Mr. Woltz, he learns that Don Corleone’s plan to get Johnny Fontaine into the new movie is not going to work. As soon as Tom is sure that he can’t convince Mr. Woltz, he politely gets up from dinner and tells him, “Mr. Corleone is a man who insists on hearing bad news immediately.” It’s not because of The Godfather’s advice, but I’ve always felt the same way. That’s why I was disappointed with DaJuan Summers’ decision to end his career as a Hoya. Remember a few weeks ago when he said he would be playing at Georgetown next year? He must’ve known at that time he was lying to people. It would have been nice to know as soon as possible. Other than his misleading the fans, I don’t hold anything against him, and neither should anybody else. More »
John Thompson III just released a statement that DaJuan Summers will be putting his name in the NBA Draft and will be hiring an agent. That means that unlike Roy Hibbert, there’s no chance of his return, and we’ve seen the last of DaJuan in a Georgetown uniform. Here’s a copy of the release, which can be found at GUHoyas.com:
We wish DaJuan all the best in his future endeavors, wherever they may take him. He informed me that he is closing the book on his college career and focusing fully on the opportunity to play professionally. He is in the process of choosing an agent.
Georgetown:
This was both a typical and an unusual game for the Hoyas. The guys started off incredibly hot from the field and were actually 16 for 18 at one point! I don’t understand how they were only ahead by ten or so. The excellent shooting was unusual, but the typical part was the end. The team tightened up, got stagnant on offense, gave up easy shots on defense and missed critical shots, even when they got good looks at the basket. As my friend and colleague Rich Chvotkin would say, “This is a recording.” More »
Here’s the audio from the press conference on Saturday night. There were lots of questions about Jessie Sapp since it was senior day, and you can hear from Coach, Jessie, and DaJuan on the subject.
Georgetown:
The Hoyas came into this game coming off a deflating loss. They knew they were taking on the worst team in the conference, and they knew their first round Big East Tournament match-up was already set. As a result, Georgetown looked like a team that had little to play for. They get the win, but it was not a pretty game, and not the sort of performance that gives the team hope of making a deep run in the Big East Tournament. More »
Here’s the audio I picked up after the Villanova game. Unfortunately, some of the questions/answers had some crazy feedback, so I left those out. The rest is embedded below.
Georgetown:
When Georgetown and Villanova play each other, you can expect an ugly, hard-fought game, and this one was no exception. The Hoyas committed a whopping 25 turnovers but somehow still managed to pull out a victory. That can be attributed to toughness. A criticism of these Hoyas has been their lack of fight. Against the Wildcats, the Hoyas gave it there all for 40 minutes, keeping up the defensive pressure and fighting for every loose ball. They now have a win over a bitter rival to show for it. More »
In the midst of all the recent Georgetown Basketball turmoil, there is one bit if good news which went pretty much unnoticed. In the loss at Marquette, DaJuan Summers scored his 1,000th point, becoming the 40th player in Georgetown Basketball history to accomplish that feat. The accomplishment is far less significant than the current state of the Hoyas, but it is a nice accomplishment, especially for a junior. We caught up with DaJuan and Coach Thompson last week to get their thoughts on this milestone.
