Memphis In-Game Thread

By Johnny

Hey, this is Johnny. We’re about 45 minutes away from the biggest game of the pre-Big East schedule for the Hoyas, as Georgetown is set to take on Memphis at the FedEx Forum, home of the Memphis Grizzlies.

Georgetown and Memphis have some history, but ever since that first matchup in the 1983 NCAA Tournament, it looks like the Hoyas have had the Tigers’ number. Let’s see if they can keep that going this afternoon.

As usual, keep your in-game thoughts coming in the comments.

Mourning Alonzo

By Hoya Hoops

As most of you know by now, this past Wednesday Alonzo Mourning suffered a career-threatening knee injury. To honor one of the all-time Hoya greats, we thought of this question for Game Time:

Which individual opponent from Alonzo’s Georgetown career did you dislike the most?

For us at Hoya Hoops, we would have to say Syracuse’s Billy Owens. Besides the obvious reasons, he also compared his game to that of Magic Johnson. (I think Magic had surpassed Owens’ skill set by the third grade). Who do you think? Let us know in the comments.

A Real Test

By Mike

As most of you know, this past week Georgetown students have been focusing on exams. And, although Thursday was the last day of finals, there is one more test for a small group of students. And it involves a trip down to Memphis, Tennesee.

Exam Answers

By Hoya Hoops

It has been a tough week, but exams are finally over. And after grading the five Hoya Hoops exams, we have a winner. Hoya Gray had the highest score of all entrants, so he wins the gift certificate to the Tombs. Congratulations, Hoya Gray!

Alonzo’s Legacy

By Hoya Hoops

Alonzo Mourning injured his knee and fell to the court in Atlanta on Wednesday. When Miami teammate Udonis Haslem went to try and help him up, Alonzo said four words, “It’s over, it’s over.” Doctors diagnosed the injury as a torn patellar tendon in his right knee. Under many circumstances players with this injury need about three months to recover, but at 37 years old, this could be the end of the line for Zo.

Long Distance Information

By Tony

Georgetown used to be criticized a lot for having an easy non-conference schedule, but there were always important non-conference opponents that provided classic match-ups for the Hoyas.

Total Points

By Hoya Hoops

Since nobody predicted Austin Freeman as the leading scorer against Jacksonville, we threw out the same question for the Radford game. Hoya Gray said that Freeman would lead all scorers, and that he did, putting up a career-high 21 points. So congratulations to Hoya Gray.

Against Memphis, the recurring question amongst analysts has been, will Georgetown control the pace and keep it low scoring or will Memphis push the tempo and speed past the Hoyas. After watching the past couple of games, though, it would seem that the Hoyas can keep up with anybody, and it’s not clear that Georgetown will want to slow the game down.

So the question for this game will require you figure out what the tempo of Saturday’s matchup will be like:

When Georgetown plays Memphis, what will the teams’ combined scores be?

We’re going to say that the game will be somewhere in the 70’s, so our guess is that Georgetown and Memphis will combine for 153 points.

What do you think?

Georgetown @ Maryland

By Johnny

Since yesterday was the 100 year anniversary of the first meeting between Georgetown and Maryland, I thought this would be a good time to talk about reigniting the local rivalry. Way back before the season started, Coach Thompson was asked when we would see the Hoyas and Terps face off again, and he responded by telling a story.
