Coaching Trades

By Hoya Hoops
  • Tom Crean has left Marquette and accepted the head coaching position at the Indiana University. After leading the Golden Eagles to the Final Four in 2003 with Dwayne Wade, Crean has helped Marquette earn 10 conference wins in each of their three seasons in the Big East.
  • George Mason coach Jim Larranaga turned down an offer from his alma mater Providence this week, opting to stay at George Mason. The Friars are still looking for a new head coach after firing Tim Welsh last month.

Turning Points - Off the Bench

By Tony

Everybody loves talking about turning points. People are always trying to find the critical play, the decisive shot, or the game-changing block that turns the tide once and for all. Sometimes the moment is obvious; other times it is totally unnoticeable, like in Georgetown’s recent win over Providence. At the 15:51 mark of the second half, Weyinmi Efejuku made a three-pointer to give the Friars their largest lead of six. Eleven seconds later came the turning point.

Dream Girl

By Tony

Doris Burke is a superstar. In an era of loud, abusive, obnoxious commentators, she is easily among the elite basketball broadcasters anywhere on the planet. Doris provided the color commentary for the Georgetown – Providence game on Monday, working along side Sean McDonough. Before I start to say why Doris is so good at her job, let me begin with the most obvious reason. She was a star guard at Providence, but she wasn’t a homer for the Friars against the Hoyas. We all know how many announcers there are on television that went to Syracuse, and even the best ones are pretty bad at disguising their desire for the Orange to win. But there is a lot more to Doris Burke than just her impartiality.

Mike’s Providence Postgame Thoughts

By Mike

Teams

Georgetown:
The Hoyas needed a road win, and they got it. Things started looking bad for the Boys in Blue when Providence took a six point lead early in the second half. But the Hoyas hung tough and methodically pulled away, led by their sharp shooting and their defense. It is especially good to see Georgetown hitting from downtown, as we know what can happen when the shots don’t fall.

Providence Recap

By Hoya Hoops

It had been a long time since Georgetown came up with a dominant second half performance, but that is exactly what they need ed and got in their 68-58 win over the Providence Friars. Georgetown reversed two recent bad trends: poor rebounding and turnovers. The Hoyas outrebounded Providence 43-26, and earned 27 second-chance points to the Friars one. Georgetown also only committed 10 turnovers, six less than their average over the last five games.

Providence In-Game Thread

By Mike

Hello, everyone. Today is President’s Day, and the Hoyas will try to honor our current Commander-in-Chief by getting a “W” in today’s game against Providence. The Friars are on the wrong side of the cut-off to make it to the Big East Tournament, so you can expect Providence to play hard, especially on their home court.

Tip-off is about 30 minutes away, so keep it right here. Feel free to post your thoughts, as the Hoyas look to stay atop of the conference standings.
