This past Saturday was the first opportunity for us fans to see the newest Hoyas in uniform. Due to circumstances, be it ineligibility or the game situation, we only go to see two of the freshman on the floor. Let’s see how they fared.

I thought that this was a pretty solid season opener for the Hoyas. Thompson-coached teams don’t usually have very impressive beginnings to their seasons, maybe due to the complexity of learning the system and getting used to the style of play. That being said, it was a comfortable victory for the boys in Gray, and it gave the younger players a good opportunity to get some game time against real opponents.

We knew it would be hard adjusting to life without Jeff Green. But maybe not this hard. In the Hoyas’ first game of the season, the four returning starters from last year’s deep postseason run - Hibbert, Sapp, Wallace, and Summers - had stellar games, scoring 23, 18, 15, and 10 respectively. But the fifth scorer was nowhere to be found. Austin Freeman was the only other Hoya to make the stats sheet - hitting a baseline jumper 30 minutes into the game - meaning the four returning starters from last year’s team contributed 97% of Georgetown’s total offense. But before anyone starts to panic, let’s take a look back at last year’s season opener.

For the first time in recent memory, the Hoyas ended the game with more 3 point attempts than 2 point attempts. This issue was addressed at half time, since Hibbert got more touches in the second period and scored 15 of his 23 in the vespers half. Also, the defense looked a little shaky at times, with the Hoyas running out at people and constantly shifting to get back in position, which resulted in some open looks for the Tribe. It will be interesting to see if Coach addresses this problem in practice this week, since John Beilein-coached teams are known for their ball movement.

In anticipation of the season opener on Saturday, I’ve been doing a little research on William and Mary basketball. In doing so, I’ve found three tidbits that somebody might find interesting. Since here in the Eyeball to Eyeball section, I usually tend to take a weird spin on things, that’s where I’ve decided to start: spin.
