Favorite Referees

By Hoya Hoops

This past week, the Hoyas were given a favorable call in the dying moments of the game against Villanova. We thought we would honor the referees in this Game Time, as a thank you:

Who is your favorite referee and why?

If you find that question a little hard to swallow, how about this one:

Who is your least hated referee and why?

For us, we have to say Mike Kitts. Sure, he doesn’t know how to count, but he has an extraordinary knack for slapstick comedy. If you ever see a ref get hit in the head with a basketball, trip over a crouched coach, or accidentally get in the way of a celebratory fist pump, you can bet it is Mike Kitts. Who are some of your favorites?

Super Tuesday

By Hoya Hoops

On Tuesday, Georgetown defeated the South Florida Bulls 63-53 while the presidential candidates duked it out in the primaries. That made us think of this question:

What made Tuesday so super for the Hoyas?

For us, the defensive effort put forth by Hibbert and Macklin made it Super Tuesday, as Roy tied his career high with 6 blocks and with Vernon in there too, the twin towers reminded us of Super Hoyas from years past. What did you find super?

The Beat Down

By Hoya Hoops

This Wednesday, the Hoyas taught St. John’s the meaning of pain, crushing them by 32 points. We thought that it would be a good time to reminisce about old-fashioned beat downs of the past:

What is your favorite blow-out Hoya win?

While we have lots, one of our favorites is last year’s Big East Tournament Final. A thrashing even the greats would be proud of. Dominating from start to finish, the Hoyas defeated the Pittsburgh Panthers 65-42 to win their seventh Big East Tournament title. What are some of your favorites?

Defensive Stopper

By Hoya Hoops

This past week, the Hoyas had a thrilling overtime victory over Syracuse. The style of the play brought back memories of classic defensive battles from Big East games of the past. We thought this would be a fun question:

Who was your favorite Georgetown defender?

Lots of good choices, but we think Don Reid was our favorite. He was big and tough, blocked a lot of shots, and probably fouled out more times than not during his career. How about you?

A History of Defense

By Hoya Hoops

Earlier this week, Tony talked about the lack of defense in Georgetown’s loss to Pitt. That made us think of this question:

What is your favorite defensive play in Georgetown History?

We can think of lots, but one personal favorite was a game against UCONN in Landover in the 1991-92 season. The score was tied at 58 with under 15 seconds left, and the Huskies with the ball. Joey Brown stole a pass, took it all the way down for a layup as time expired, and the Hoyas were victorious 60-58.

What are some of your favorites? Let us know in the comments.

Centers of Attention

By Hoya Hoops

In our pregame predictions for this Saturday’s game against Connecticut, we mentioned the challenge Roy Hibbert will have squaring off against Hasheem Thabeet. The center duel helped this question come about:

What is your favorite memory from a Hoya big man?

We can think of lots of great plays by Georgetown centers throughout the years, but our favorite has to be the Patrick Ewing dunk in the 1984 semifinal game against Kentucky. Yes, we know the basket was waved off since he technically traveled beforehand, but that thunderous one-handed slam can still get a boisterous reaction from any Hoya crowd. What do you think?

2007 Big East Classics

By Hoya Hoops

Tomorrow marks the start of the Big East season for the Hoyas. Since we already talked about some great Big East Openers in Hoya History, we thought it would be fun to look back at all of the Big East games from last season:

What was your favorite Big East regular season game from last year?

For us, we liked the final win against UCONN. It had been ten years since we last beat them, it gave us a claim of the regular season title (which Marquette gave us full-out by defeating Pitt), and it was a fitting end to a fine season. Not to mention it’s always fun to beat Calhoun.

What do you think? Let us know.

Your Favorite Carols

By Hoya Hoops

On Tuesday, we put out a list of Georgetown-related Christmas Carols. So for this week’s Game Time, we’re letting you join in on the fun.

What are your favorite Hoya Christmas Carols?

Any ideas?

Mourning Alonzo

By Hoya Hoops

As most of you know by now, this past Wednesday Alonzo Mourning suffered a career-threatening knee injury. To honor one of the all-time Hoya greats, we thought of this question for Game Time:

Which individual opponent from Alonzo’s Georgetown career did you dislike the most?

For us at Hoya Hoops, we would have to say Syracuse’s Billy Owens. Besides the obvious reasons, he also compared his game to that of Magic Johnson. (I think Magic had surpassed Owens’ skill set by the third grade). Who do you think? Let us know in the comments.

Non-Verizon Center Classics, Part 2

By Hoya Hoops

We just finished up our Ten Years in Ten Days tribute to the Hoyas’ tenure at the Verizon Center. This week, we talked about the important home games from the last five seasons. So like we did last Friday, we’re gonna ask you about your favorite Hoya moments away from Chinatown:

What was your favorite Hoya game NOT played at the Verizon Center from 2003 to 2007?

Now we know a lot of people are going to pick a certain game from last season, but we’re going to go with the game at Villanova in January of 2005. The Wildcats decided to celebrate the 20th Anniversary of their National Championship during a game against the Hoyas. On the day Villanova honored the players from their 1985 team, Georgetown defeated the Wildcats in the final second, as Darrel Owens’ two free throws put the Hoyas in front. The final score? 66-64.

We’ve talked at length about the Hoyas’ struggles against Villanova at the Verizon center, and we think this victory made up for that opening day loss ten years ago.
